I'm throwing out the idea of having a public or a private profile option. Maybe you can toggle it on or off, or have 2 versions of a profile? Maybe when you search someone you see their first version that they fill out. When you friend them, you get the second version, where the user can put more about themselves? o:

Or maybe just a private or not private option where no one can see your profile. o:
