Forums General Chit-Chat And other artists do this?

Since instagram changed algorithm do you tend to shamelessly plug your instagram with everyone you happen to meet?

Like I'll be at work (I work at starbucks) and we will be doing the whole customer connection and I somehow like, bring up my art and my instagram, and sometimes I get follows from my customers and coworkers because I do this. xD But I wonder if this is annoying or something I shouldn't do? xD

I don't think it's annoying to tell people. Posting on every artists post and say "Follow me!" or self promoting in comments on the other hand though is quite annoying.
When people shamelessly post on other popular artists posts to get followers...just feels a little disrespectful and feels sometimes like some want a shortcut to followers when growing a following is a gradual thing and not an immediate thing.

But i think in RL it's not really annoying because I'm sure friends and coworkers might wanna follow you.

I try not to tell anyone cause i feel my art does not look very good right now. :vanora_sweat:
all I have is my family and a few friends following me.

I don't even use my instagram anymore. Is that where people post art? I was big on DeviantArt before it all devolved into weird fetish porn. I don't have anything against weird fetish porn but my art is definitely not going to stand out in that selection XD I've just been posting to facebook and pillowfort lately. I want to take commissions but I don't even know how to do that anymore either. What even is self promotion?

I try to keep my work and life separate. I probably wouldn't mind sharing if some asked, especially if it might lead to work. I do try to plug across platforms though. Never hurts to cover all your bases. Though I've noticed tumblr seems to hide posts if I try to share from Instagram :[

@Lucifera: never a fan of Instagram. I have had a slew of social media and artistry accounts. I used to shamelessly plug my art and writings to anyone who would listen. I feel like so long as it is in person and you can get a true read of the person, then plug it. But if there's ever a doubt they aren't receptive then don't. Not sure what kinda job you have but just be safe. Keep it professional.

I'm sort of the opposite!
I need that sort of brave attitude when it comes to my work as I am proud of what I do.
I think I just remember a time when I used to be proud and show off my work BEFORE I had much skill in it and found people either didn't like it or didn't care;;

No shame in being proud of your art, if anything all artists should be proud!
As long as you're not insisting they follow your art after they say no then there's no issue!

I dont really use my Instagram as means to get more followers these days. I tried but, I prefer to focus on other things and yeaa.. I never market my art the proper way.

Maybe one day I will advertise myself better..

I'm not an artist, nor do I know many people but I'd totally plug by 'gram if I could.

@Koah: You are my favorite kind of customer! Lol. I had one customer come through who honestly I follow her back because her photoshoots she does are so inspiring. I asked before if she'd let me use her photos as ref for some paintings and she loves it.

@MoodyBats: No, I don't do that. Even seeing that on a post bothers me. Typically, since I live in a college town, we have a lot of alums and staff coming through our DT and it's been super good for networking with the department heads, etc. And a lot of other art students also come through. I mainly just use our customer connection requirement to be like 'yeah, I have to do this then go home and work on a project for art class.' and it spark natural conversation, and they usually ask if they can see some and I give them my insta because I can't just whip out my phone at work. xD In a lot of situations they love it. And even with no follows it's nice to get out there.

@Keturah: No, I don't expect follows. But it's good for networking practice. Especially if I want to eventually market myself to potential clients. I'm not super confident in my skills but due to drawing class and keeping up with daily practice and sketching, I do see a LOT of improvment and it makes me so happy to document and share it on my insta. And some people just like to check out my page and not follow. I'm good with that. xD I am not follow thirsty. I do have plans on adding youtube to my social media to try and eventually draw in more people. (my mount for my phone comes in today. I am super excited.)

@Kreatura: I used to be super self conscious about my artwork. xD Now I plug it because I gotta sell myself. My great grandpa is actually my biggest supporter and he's always like "you need to tell more people. You need to market this." xD and now going to school and hearing my profs do the same, I know it's something you have to do eventually. I just sometimes hope it's more natural and not like a push to ask for followers.

@Lucifera: Oh my gosh! I love that!!! I stopped posting on Insta recently, but for the last few years, I've been modeling for photographers and posting that stuff there. I keep it separate from my other social media accounts. c: It's like The Secret Life of Me. lmao

@Lucifera: I don't see any harm in that.
Also doing art memes, as well as any art challenges, can help get your art around.
I still need to do art challenges. But I'm not very confident in my work right now.
So I'm very hesitant. :vanora_sweat:

@Koah: Do it! I know a lot of artists who try and find FC they can actually credit on insta! I love finding people who are cosplayers, etc. that I can model a painting off of. And it's super fun because I know who it is, and I can give proper credit.

@MoodyBats: This is true. Lol. I just don't know of any art challenges going around right now aside from mermay and I'm not sure I have the mental stamina for that this year. xD

@Lucifera: There is artvsartist as well as draw this in your style
is constantly going around.
A lot of times, artists who host their "draw this in your style"
will share a lot of the art done if you do their draw this in your style.

@lucifera:
It is an excellent networking practice and I really need to do it more!
I've learnt to be a lot more open and better at connecting online but it often doesn't compare to knowing someone face to face! I'm just so awkward IRL sometimes, especially when it comes to something I'm passionate about but not all people may understand, haha
That's so cool you're doing daily practice! I wish I had the time and motivation but at least I'm doing lil bits towards artwork I'm working on~

I've always been slow but even more so now we're all stuck at home.

@Keturah: Yeah. I also think it's practice because I am officially going to start a YT channel, or I really want to. But I am so nervous. Like, i have these chunky arms and with my complexion my arm hair looks dark. xD And just being at work I can't do anything really with my nails/my hands will look awful sometimes so I am just hoping that I can actually be successful in this new little project.

I don't think that is annoying.
I do that with my friends as well especially when I meet another artist.

But is usually how you approach can be annoying like for once I got baited to follow this guy insta acc so he can help me to get more followers.
Turns out it wasn't free though.
