if we're talking about pixel art, Aseprite is phenominal and super cheap. It goes on sale pretty regularly too.

i just downloaded sketchbook but haven't really tried it yet out
right now i'm using krita which is free for mac and pretty similar to gimp

i found a fix for my tablet driver and got it working again ^^
