not to generalize but i feel like a lot of workplaces, esp if they're more later-stage career people ,
it's like work is kind of just like do ur time and get paid so you can focus on family / life outside of work lol
so like being speedy just isn't really worth the effort / not really any incentive for it

I've thought about it but the problem with most startups is that they usually have a culture of expecting you to work more than 40 hours a week and whenever they need you and that's super not for me. I need to be able to say that I'm done with work past a certain point in the evening and on weekends. I'd go insane if I was 'always on'.
I'm also still pretty low in years of experience. I think that has a lot to do with how I've been compensated so far.

mm that's true i think that is common :-/ but not necessary! i've worked at a few and they all had p good work/life balance imo
i've kept the same hours everywhere i've worked and everyone respected that and there wasn't any pressure to work beyond the hours i set
maybe i've just been lucky though? i also prioritize culture quite a bit when i job search

I usually prioritize culture too - and I will interview with startups. But I find they usually turn me down because of a 'culture mismatch' which is pretty much always because I want to work set hours loool. It could be the area I'm in has a different startup culture than other places. And with my current job search I'm really only looking at 'Design System Teams' because I got to work on one a few months ago and loved it and ended up not being able to stay. But they tend to exist more at bigger companies than smaller ones so I haven't been talking with startups as much this time around because of that.

ah i see, yeah that's true different cities do have different cultures for stuff like that , though i'm hoping that will matter less as remote work is becoming more accepted

Yea... that's what I've heard but I honestly don't know for sure how true or not that is for me. I've talked to very few people about exactly how much I'm making and of those that I have if they were making more it's because they had a higher-level title than I did at the time so it made sense that they made more.

i think glassdoor has numbers for city+years of experience, that could be good data to back you up if you are getting undercompensated and want to ask or negotiate for more

Yea I don't live close enough to a city to be able to walk everywhere.
But with the pandemic I've actually been getting my groceries delivered - another reason it stays pretty on schedule is because I put the order in earlier in the week to reserve my time slot for it.
