What metaphors and symbolic imagery do you interpret from this scene?

My first thought was yin and yang, although that would probably work better if the dog were lying in the other direction with its head facing the bottom of the photo. Well to be more accurately yin and yang they would need to switch sides and the cat would be facing the bottom. I can't think of anything but yin and yang now though
