Yes, the book is Daughter of the Empire by Raymond E. Feist and Janny Wurts. It’s a spin-off series from the main fantasy, but you don’t need to read the rest to read that one. It’s more political and less fantasy; about a girl who inherits her family’s house (almost Japanese like) and has to build it into a powerful house. One of the things she does is befriend the ant species. I loved them most of all in the series, although the whole thing was good.
