Eh, that sounds about right. Reminds me of Riot saying they didn't anticipate so much success with League of Legends, and so their servers were nowhere near prepared for as much continuous traffic.

Oh, for sure. I agree with you. The comparison to Riot was more to their inability to plan, and have a better infrastructure in place which is clearly Discord's current problem.
Communication is huge. Skype is really bad for resources and whatnot, but at least it's reliable in that the service very rarely (if ever) goes out because of something on their end.
