Yeah I had to explain that their, they, them can all be used in cases where you didn't know the gender of whoever's being discussed.
That's so basic that any teacher who doesn't know that shouldn't be a teacher.
I had to pull up historical uses of it as a gender neutral term, it's not some new thing. The context of the argument is, we were supposed to write an analysis of a popular song. At the time the only song I was willing to use was some Adele thing, I hate all top 10 pop. Anyway I used 'they, their, them' to describe the person the song was about, as Adele did not specify what the person's gender was. So you know it would be transphobic or homophobic. My teacher decided if a song is sung and written by a lady, then it's about a dude.
I saw a site like that before. According to yours, in the UK, the hit on my birthday was When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going by Billy Ocean. I'm okay with that.
Huh mine was Vogue by Madonna, and I am okay with this.
