Simple, which one do you call the bag that you took to school or just use in general to carry your things? (Not including purses or fanny packs.)
I work for a school district for the transportation department (I'm a bus monitor). I usually use either phrase. But I did have a few kids tell me that it is called a 'Back Pack'. Maybe it was just how I was raised? I want to say it is a regional thing, but I don't think it is. (I moved all over when I was a kid, my dad was in the military.)
Gonna keep a record of this just for fun. Edit: Gonna stop counting, lol. Back Pack wins.
Back Pack: 13
Book Bag: 0
Both: 4

pls don't
I always called it a backpack. When I taught though, I noticed some kids called it book bag. I hadn't heard the term before then.
Backpack
Cause it's carried around my back, not slung over my shoulder.. (or at least the on I have)

@Apollo Im Burning: Added to count.
@Shamrock Shamus: Added to count, and same here. I was yelled at by the bus driver last year to call it a back pack and not a book back.
@Vig: Added to count.
3 for backpack so far

Back pack. XD My grandfather, may he rest in peace, called them book satchels.
@Concentricity: Lets bring back that phrase. xD It is classy!
@Queen Prisma: It is definitely from the 1920s, I'll say that much. XD
@bum: Ooh! Pretty avi!
Both... I definitely remember calling it both.
@Concentricity: There is a lot of phrases from that time that needs to come back. I think a term for 'doin it' was 'fadoodling' or something like that. I don't remember though.
@ChemicalDivision: YAY! I'm no the only one!
@ChemicalDivision: YAY! I'm no the only one!
@bum: You're welcome. :)
@Queen Prisma: LOL, Fadoodlin. I've heard of some crazy terms for that as well. I personally like referring to men and women as guys and dolls/dames.
@Concentricity: I know that 'guys' can be a pretty gender neutral term. I use it regardless if it is a man or woman, the same thing goes for dude. I think 'dame' has been around for a very long time.
@Queen Prisma: I use guys neutrally as well. I have a few cool dudes that I know that actually refer to women as dames still, as a term of respect.
@Concentricity: So very true though. :)
I thought book bags were the ones slung over one shoulder and rests on your hip. Backpacks just go on your back xD
@Shark: I think those are saddle bags.
@Concentricity: I have NEVER heard of that term before. That sounds awful. xD
@Shark: LOL. maybe it's just a southern thing? Though I think I'm getting it confused with messenger bag. Messenger bag is the side one, saddle bag is the kind of little purse on the side.
