I say backpack!
Nothing wrong with book bag though. Sounds less kiddie for some reason.

Mostly it depends on the style of bag used. A bag that is worn (or at least has straps to be worn) on both shoulders is a back pack, a messenger bag style bag, I consider more of a "book bag".
Although I never really called my messenger bag a book bag ever.
XD
To summarize....backpack.

I preferred normal bookbags back when I was still in school.
I have a messenger bag though now, that when I'm going someplace, or even just to move from one room to the other, that I can fit my laptop in and random art stuff. ^^

I used to use an over the shoulder style bag so just said bag. A back pack to me goes on your back and a book bag is like a thin fabric briefcase thing like
which we just had in primary school and was usually printed with your schools name on.

@x: Never really thought that back pack sounded kiddy. ^^;;

@Kaderin Triste: I usually call everything a 'book back', regardless of how many straps it has. But I really never thought of it that way. I'm just so used to calling it that.

@Miss Kitty: I just use my book back for everything, even though it straps to my back. xD I need to clean it out though.... There is probably food and wrappers in it. Dx It probably needs to be washed too, now that I think about it.

@Kitten: That is actually pretty cute. I never went to a school that had something like that though. I was always in a public school. The only thing that the school gave us was the school planner.

@Queen Prisma: It's probably a British thing haha but I'm sure we had to buy them ourselves. We all had to buy uniforms too and most are embroidered with our schools name or crest. We did get given planners in high school though and we get all our text books and work books given to us too.

@Kitten: We had to buy uniforms too, but none with our school chest on it, but you are probably right on it being a British thing. :) I think it was only the public school system where I was that made us wear school uniforms. Every where else I went, I didn't have a school uniform.

Back pack.

I think those of the generation above me called them a book bag...but part of that may be back in the gold ole days....you'd mostly have books, now the school want you to have half the classroom in the bag and then some maybe.
