There was always something about celebrations that made Adrian feel off. Maybe it was the over the top fancy hors d'oeuvres, or the incredibly expensive main course that, let's be honest, didn't fill anyone. Maybe it was the drunk people, and their dancing and over the top personalities. Or it could have just been the people. Either way, despite Adrian's job, he never really felt as though any celebration was truly happy. And somehow, it filled the places with an intense melancholy, to the point where he didn't need his own woes to write the music people so danced to at his shows. He just needed a wedding. Or in this case, an engagement party.

His band had just finished setting things up as people started coming in. The soon-to-be mother in law of the groom was bouncing from service to service ensuring that caterers were on schedule, that the stand-by DJ for a break for the band was ready. and even coming to pester Adrian a few times about his own readiness. He honestly wanted to throw a few Xanax at the woman in hopes that she'd calm herself, but he remained calm and polite, if not stoic so as to hide his intense dread of the times to come.

And soon they did. Guests were coming in, and when they all took their seats, Adrian hopped on stage and the band began to play the bride and groom's chosen song as they entered the room.

Far be it for Eliott to turn down the glitz and glamour of the high life. He grew up in it, thrived in it. Maybe it wasn't the life everyone thought was honorable, but it was something. Until he saw what lay underneath all the crystal champagne glasses and the designer gowns. His family didn't rise up through hard work, but through illegal trade. If you're asking if it's the very trade that sent people to rehab, you'd be in the right ballpark. And he hadn't learned about this from the tongues of those who concealed the thread from him, but from being kidnapped as a child. Maybe it was the worst thing to happen to him, or maybe it was the best.

He didn't want any part of that life, he didn't want anything from it. The cell phones he got before they even hit the market, lost their valuable shine. And the cars he used to love to customize with his uncle, lost the appeal. The very food he'd savoured felt like ashes in his mouth after living one week bound, gagged, and unwashed. He was sure he'd even shared a bed with rats during that week. IT surely did open the eyes of a 16-year-old at that point. But how he could be so blind? Well... His family was full of artists of the highest talent. Painting a film over the eyes of any outsiders using their investments in everything from groundbreaking technology, to weapons and even big pharma. How he couldn't see behind the weapons and big pharma buy-ins, he wasn't sure. But they definitely found a way to make themselves icons of wealth, and even charity. Funding make-a-wish, or even small-town health clinics. Taking pictures with the less fortunate. Or their favorite, sending Eliott and his siblings to help educate kids in third world countries every summer.

It was a well-built image, and far be it for anyone to try and poke holes in it. Many reporters learned that if they wanted a good story, they'd pose for the front page in many charity events. But as soon as anyone tried to swim in their bloody waters, they'd be taken care of. And rather swiftly.

As soon as he hit 18, Eliott had enough smiling for photos when he was horrified of what he knew was happening in their stables. Or when he happened to see his family's hired guns lurking about. He took what he was able to skillfully save from odd and end cash withdrawls when there were carnivals or some sort of fair around he could get away with, packed what he needed, and ran. He bought himself a new life on the other side of the country, studied, interned, and eventually got into his own business in the tech industry. And yet, here he was.

His years living mostly in what he needed, not craving or wanting for excess, left him rather horrified to be in a situation where there was once again no end to the sparkle. And now, marrying into a family that would strengthen his business. Well, the girl was nice enough. He did consider her a friend he could go to. But he thought he had convinced her he was the type for small and intimate. And yet here it was. Huge and gaudy... The fact that floral arrangements so large you couldn't see across the table were everywhere annoyed him. What was the point of round tables? Of such a big social event if a centerpiece, he'd sooner throw away kept family from looking at one another in the eye?

And yet here he was done up in a rather overdone suit, descending the steps with his fiance, that same fake smile he learned growing up, plastered on his face. Live band, lots of overdressed people. And in some of the corners where his soon-to-be mother in law had set the trouble makers, whispering their bits of juicy gossip already. How on earth did he flee such a depressing business to throw himself into something else more depressing? At least with his family, inside the walls, people were honest about who they were. But here, well... No such honesty would be found. That was for sure. And yet here he was, playing the good fiance as he rested his hand on Abigale's hip and kissing her temple.

"You look gorgeous." He whispered to her while the applause of people almost drowned out the music.
