She was silent as she made her way through the streets, not entirely sure what it was that she was supposed to make of this. The city was all up in arms, she knew that. There was certainly reasn for people to be concerned, but she hoped, she so hoped, that it wouldn't come down on her.

Although being as odd as so many people would consider her as, she wouldn't be surprised if she was one that was pinned as being 'unnatural' and as a result investigated. Then again, people, overall, hated spiders... and she was an arachnologist. She was sure she'd be one that would be pinned quickly.

What the hell is going on around here...? She wondered as she walked home from where she'd gone for lunch. She didn't have to work that day, thankfully. But at the same time, she wasn't sure if it was a good thing, due to how she was a bit paranoid regarding someone, anyone, getting the idea that the was one that wasn't exactly 'natural'.

As she continued walking, her white hair causing her to sadly stand out from a crowd with the sun, she heard a commotion nearby. She hesitated before sighing and making her way to the alley that she heard it from, wondering what it was that was going on, and seriously hoping that she wouldn't regret it.

Rainy gave a sigh of annoyance as she rushed down the street. She had done it again despite setting at least twelve different alarms! She was late for work for the millionth time. The fact that her boss hadn't fired her yet was a godsend.

She chugged her mug of coffee as she ran through the city. she hadn't wanted to pick an apartment on the complete opposite end of town but it was the only area her crappy salary would let her afford and that was only after convincing the landlord to lower the price.

Her tangled auburn hair was flowing behind her as she moved. She would most likely have to put it in a messy bun when she got to the shop but that was nothing out of the ordinary. Luckily her boss wasn't a blowhard on their appearances as long as they brought in money.

Rainy stopped as she came to a dark alley. She knew that it was a shortcut to the area she was trying to get to. She also knew it wasn't safe. However, the anxious part of her won over and she quickly darted down the alleyway. She made her way through the maze of turned and eventually saw the end of the area. However, she was stopped by a sudden force crashing into her.

She let out a yell as she was slammed into the wall of one of the buildings, metal trashcans crashing to the ground and creating a racket. Before she could yell, a large hand covered her mouth.

"Stay quiet and no one gets hurt love," the gruff voice growled.

As she peered down the alley, trying to be as subtle as she could be, she sighed.

There was no way she could see anything without being seen. So, she opted to do what it was that she knew she could do. With another sigh, she just set something on the wall, and the small thing ran off, scurring down the alley. She, meanwhile, leaned against the wall, her back to it as she concentrated slightly.

As she had the connection with what she sent, she saw what the small little critter saw.

An auburn haired lady getting slammed up against the wall as the one accosting her pulled out a blade of some sort. She wasn't interested in that.

"Oh. oh fuck that." She muttered before pushing herself off of the wall and making her way down the alley.

"Yo! The fuck you doin' down here?" She asked as she neared, hoping to give the girl a chance to bail if need be.

The male turned to the new addition and glared. His distraction made it where Rainy was able to wiggle out. She ran behind the new woman but stopped. She didn't want to just leave the other woman alone. She stood her ground a few feet behind the other woman. She knew she wouldn't be much help in a fight but if she needed to run for help she would be able to.

The male gave a growl of annoyance and pointed the knife at the strange girl. "You have a lot of nerve getting in someone else's business. Get lost, girly. I would hate to have two casualties. Though you seem weird enough that it probably wouldn't matter," he smirked.

She just rolled her eyes.

"Really?" She asked.

"Come on. You really think you can deal with a weird girl like me?" She asked, taunting him, and knowing she was. As it stood, she was just trying to give the other girl a chance to bolt.... but it seemed she wasn't going to.

"Yo, you arachnophobic?" She asked after a moment, wondering if she was. When she answered she wasn't, the white haired lady nodded.

"Good." With that, a hoard of spiders came out of the messenger bag she had at her side, sitting at her hip, and swarmed the attacker.

Rainy wasn't arachnophobic but that didn't mean she didn't shield her eyes as the spiders attacked the man. He screamed but it was quickly silenced by the horde of spiders. She waited until she heard the arachnids stop and turned her attention to the girl.

"Thank you for saving me, miss. Can I ask your name? Also, what are you exactly?" she questioned. What the woman just did may have freaked her out but it also intrigued her. She had never been big on creepy crawlies but curiosity was quickly overtaking her. Was she also still late for work? Yes, yes she was. But right now she didn't care.

As the spiders disipated, she just brushed her hair back off her face before turning to face the one that she'd jumped in to help.

"Name's Anya." She stated.

"As for what... uh... human like you." she stated, lying through her teeth (hopefully convincingly). She had no idea who she could, or could not, trust at this point in time. With everything going on in the city, that wasn't something too hard to believe, though.

"I just keep spiders as pets because I'm weird like that."

Rainy could tell that the girl was lying but she figured it best not to push. Least she ends up like her assailant. She gave a gentle smile and she offered out her hand.

"Well, thank you for helping me, Anya. It's a pleasure to meet you. And your crawly pets. They're so well trained!" she exclaimed.

She then looked down the entrance of the alleyway and thought for a moment. She could rush off to work and get scolded before going to do her work for the day. Or she could properly thank her savior.

"Would you like to hang out? If not that's fine, I totally understand since you don't really know me. I just feel like saying thank you isn't really enough for what you did," she explained.

Anya just laughed lightly as she accepted Rainy's hand.

"That they really are." She agreed with a smirk.

"And sure. We can grab coffe or something. Let me know who the hell I risked my ass for." She added with a chuckle before looking to her watch. She paused a moment afterward before reaching into her bag and withdrawing a wallet. Once she had that, she pulled a card out, then a pen from her bag, scribbled something on the back of the card, and passed it to Rainy.

"Cell is on the back. Feel free to text or whatever when you want to meet up." She then said as she returned everything to her bag. She figured she'd leave it there, mostly because she didn't want to be too pushy or anything (not that it truly mattered to her, mind.)

"That sounds great. Also I realized that I didn't say my name. I'm Rainy! I might contact you after work if that's okay!" she said with a smile.

She turned and walked towards the exit before turning around once more and giving a wave. "See you around, Anya!" With that, she turned and began running towards her work. She was majorly later than normally but she only hoped that her boss would be understanding given that she just almost got killed.

After Rainy had managed to make her way to work, she was chewed out for being late by her boss, but it wasn't something that was super surprising. She had expected a bit of a chew, out. As she expected, her boss was a bit understanding, but still not happy with her.

While they were speaking about all that in his office, there was a bit of a commotion outside.

"No... you have to be kidding me." She heard as something was turned up out there. It sounded like a news segment, and apparently people weren't happy.

Rainy and her boss exited the office to see what the commotion was. Rainy looked to the tv and her hand instantly went to her mouth in shock.

On the tv was a broadcaster talking about the string of missing people lately, but what was so shocking was the scene being shown. She didn't get how they could show that on the air so easily.

"Before you is the devastating scene that is coming live from our helicopter. Five individuals found burned alive, their corpse barely held together as they were gathered by medics. This is only the latest in these strange string of disappearances and murders. We'll have more if medics can identify the bodies but there is no doubt that these are some of the missing people that have disappeared. Back to you"

Rainy felt her stomach churn. If she had eaten anything that morning it probably would have come back up.

"Okay, Rainy. Get to work and try not to be that late again," her boss said as he turned the tv back down, looking a bit annoyed by what was on the screen.

Rainy nodded and began working around the shop.

The reports continued to come in for weeks, potentially months. It seemed like it was something that had been going on forever.

A few months later, there was a news segment about more people going missing, which really was expected by that point. Anya was watching it in a coffeeshop while waiting for Rainy to show up. They'd kept in contact over the time, and had both found they rather enjoyed the company of the other person. She wanted to give Rainy a heads up... she was going to leave. She couldn't sta here, not with the shit going on.

She knew it was a matter of time before she was in serious shit, and she wanted to avoid that as much as she could.

Rainy entered the coffee shop, a smile on her face. She had grown to enjoy the meet-ups she and Anya did. They were one of the best parts of her week. She looked around and quickly found their usual table and hopped over to sit across from her. She motioned for the barista to make her usually and turned back to her friend with a smile.

"Hey, Anya! It's such a lovely day outside. Have you enjoyed the weather today?" she questioned.

She noticed the tv out of the corner of her eye and saw the news story. Her good mood dampened a bit at the news, though in all honesty everyone was probably desensitized to it by now, as bad as that sounded. She was still saddened but there was no shock factor to it anymore.

Anya just sighed softly as Rainy said what she did.

"The weather is gorgeous, yes." She agreed.

"But... I called you out here for another reason." She added, her voice carrying a bit more weight than she was sure that her friend wanted to hear.

"I gotta go. As in I have to move. It just isn't safe in this city anymore." Her words were sure, but there was something behind her voice. Something in the background, and it was easy enough for Rainy to pick up on it.

She didn't want to leave, she didn't like how this was happening, but she was honestly terrified of what would happen to her if she was caught.

Rainy froze at the tone in her friend's voice. It didn't sound good. And she was proven right when Anya said she had to leave. She felt her face fall, though tried not to get emotional.

"But if anyone tried to hurt you, couldn't you just use your spiders? It's not fair that you have to leave," she said solemnly.

Rainy cringed at her own statement. 'It's not fair?' She sounded like a child. While it was true, she knew that Anya wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

"Sorry, that sounded a bit childish and whiny. When are you....gonna leave?" she asked.

"After we're done here." Anya answered before sighing.

"And it's the spiders that are why I need to leave." She added before pausing a moment. She didn't want to say much, mostly because she didn't know if there was anyone who was listening in that it'd be problematic for them to hear, but she knew that she had to say something.

"Rainy... " She paused before biting her lip.

"I'm not human." She whispered. It was super quiet, and to a point that Rainy had needed to seriously pay attention to hear it.

But the question ... was whether or not she did catch it or not.

It took Rainy a moment for what she said to sink in. When it did, her eyes widened big. She wanted to gasp but she also knew Anya seemed nervous so drawing attention wouldn't be a good idea.

She leaned further across the table, her eyes holding a million questions but she held back. Instead, she just asked a simple question.

"B-but if you're not human, then what are you?" she whispered back.

Anya sighed lightly. She didn't say anything for a moment before just pulling her phone out, typing something, and hitting send.

'I'm a very unknown type of demon was all she said.

Which most people would agree with, what with the whole spider thing. She sent as a second a couple of seconds later. After putting her phone back in her pocket, she just sighed, again.

"See why I gotta bail?"

Rainy took out her phone and looked at the text messages. All in all, she really wasn't surprised by the information she was given. It explained the spiders better as well as a few other things.

Rainy looked to Anya and gave a sad smile.

"Yeah, I understand. It doesn't seem fair but I understand," she said.

She then thought for a moment, her eyes flickering to the tv before seeming thoughtful.

"Are the people going missing....different like you?" she whispered.
