@Totalanimefan: Ripping up the already ... errm... "claimed" rug is a good step, IMO. Replacing it with a new one that you can wash sounds like a good idea. Have you also thought about putting something he doesn't like (like aluminum foil or something equally evil for dogs) on top of it to dissuade him from trying on the new rug? - just a thought. I'm sure you're tired of thinking about it and certainly tired of dealing with it (I certainly would be!)
