Not in any particular order.
Vampires give you a lot to work with for a story. You can use them to talk about addiction, illness, loneliness, immortality (and coping with said immortality), prejudice, alienation, self-indulgence, self-hatred, superiority, seductiveness, deception, etc.
I like ghost stories and what potential reasons there are for a spirit remaining after death. How did they die? Were there murdered? How do they feel? Are they vengeful? Are they even human anymore or something sinister left behind? Ghost stories tend to go hand and hand with mysteries and I love a good mystery too.
I just really enjoy the aesthetic of skeletons. I'm dressing up as one for Halloween.
Runner up choice was witches but I don't personally place them in the monster category by default, and I have a lot of different feelings regarding witches and their symbolism that would take hours to go through.
