I'm asking for school work
my brain is fried
I have a paper to write about an ethical dilemma I have or to make up one to write about
I've been reading random examples online but I dunno, I guess it helps more to hear examples that actually happen, rather than a shallow made-up scenario. Gives me more information to pull from.
I don't think I have any dilemmas going on recently enough for me to recall. But I could just be major brain farting
edit:
for those who might not know: ethical dilemma is "a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two courses of action, either of which entails transgressing a moral principle."
Forums General Chit-Chat What ethical dilemmas do/have you had?
God there's so many.
Not stopping to help that homeless person with a cardboard sign because I'm worried about my safety.
Eating meat despite knowing the poor conditions of the livestock industry.
Buying things cheaply from China knowing all the poor conditions and crooked business practices.
There's a lot of simple things we do every day.
@priestess of pie:
Those are some really good ones, actually! Things we don't normally think about but they really are daily dilemmas.
Holy poop you helped me so much, now I have all sorts of subjects coming to mind

ooh, there's one close to mine own heart. Being that driving/cars terrify and frustrate me to no end! Had a rant just this morning about how I wish we lived in a world where there were no automobiles (as a truck clouded our windshield with black smog). But at the same time, I'd cry forever if I saw a horse get hurt from lugging me around..
Also the overuse of energy, but I cannot bring myself to stop using my pc. The world almost requires one anymore

I just read a crap ton about it lmao
It starts with how cars were cheaper and easier to obtain in the US, so it became regular for most households to have personal vehicles. But also that the residential zones are so limited here, it causes our building to be more spread out, making travel to get anywhere much longer. There is also less convenience around walking/biking/ect. to get to places because many areas haven't built around such a concept. Plus, again, there's more distance to travel so it's a problem anyways.
On another note, this paper still confuses me like hell
Its like I"m supposed to be doing this with groups but I was told to do it alone as homework. wat
Also it wants me to come up with solutions so I think I chose a hard topic to solve..

OH MAN dont get me started on single-use plastics. It is definitely a dilemma I definitely become guilty of many times. Like eating out and using the plastic cups or utensils. Or living with people who continue to buy and serve food on styrofoam plates ect. but I use them anyways.
I wish US would ban single use plastics. We could stand to be less lazy and just clean our reusable things.
@totalanimefan:
I argue it a lot when people give me a hard time for not driving. I've been extremely terrified for a LONG time, only recently got to the point where I can drive a car straight down one road for 15 minutes to get to my job. But I still get massive panic attacks if the slightest thing happens, like the other night when my windshield fogged up a bit. Scares me so much not being on my feet, man. I literally just lost a friend 3 weeks ago to a car accident. Hasn't made it any easier to cope in a country so dependent on them.
We'd have to construct better public transportation. They aren't 100% free of environmental footprints, but could minimize it a lot to less vehicles..

Yeah I'm 27 and only just started college. Much of the reason being I couldn't drive to access pretty much anything except for a basic retail job for so long. Until I moved.
I live in a tiny ass city in Colorado. Its also not very safe to use public transportation here, which adds to dilemma of depending on cars. But I still rely on the bus a lot to get to and from school.
That's scary, I'm so glad you guys are alright. Vehicles are too friggin big in the US. There are sooooo many of those giant black trucks where I live and they take up 2 parking spaces! Plus they always park in front of other peoples' home (which always ends up being mine, no matter where I live, so I have to park a block away just so I'm not also blocking someone else's home). That's also exactly what hit my friend in the accident. She probably would have lived if it were smaller cars. She was driving in a neighborhood as well!

gods, I agree! There's a stereotype on the big trucks here for a reason. They tend to drive like assholes. Cutting people off, racing down the roads and getting aggressive. I think it takes a certain personality to even want to drive one of those things. Unless its required for a job, of course.

I totally agree! My college dean lady has this van that is SO. BIG. Everyone calls it a boat. Like, I'm amazed how huge it is.
this is her personal vehicle
I dont think I have enough education about housing. I haven't thought about it as much as I think about things like residential zone restrictions. The way its set up so houses are in these ginormous clusters and businesses are separated so you HAVE to drive to get to most basic needs.
Where I live, its getting pretty bad and ends up really clustered in one spot cause thats where all the shops are. Too many people try to squeeze in. There are probably better ways to use our space more efficiently, while still increasing homes as necessary.

@Jolly: i just have the Dilemma that I want my baby come out of me now. But ist still 10 weeks to due day. Its so egoistical of me thinking that way! Because i know she isnt ready but i want to Hold her!
★
@Jolly: OOF yeah that's a big one... a number of those plastics can be recycled tho, but so many people aren't educated about what can and can't be recycled that they just end up in the garbage anyway, which sucks
I didn't learn til college that the plastic lids on soda cups can be recycled AKSLSL

my worst ethical dilemmas are usually about work
do i write that student up for violence knowing she had a terrible day and that she was acting out because of what she's going through? if i don't then she gets away with hurting others but if i do then she may or may not receive the help she needs and is instead punished when what she actually needs is support
usually the way i solve it is by getting the guidance counselor involved but it really sucks to be in that position and feel like it's lose lose, since often times a student will shut down on the first person responding to the situation regardless of how you approach it

@songlord: I was thinking about my work ethical dilemmas too!
Do I allow this student to be passed on to the next grade level knowing that they aren't successful with the current grade level standards or do I hold them back with the knowledge that it pretty much guarantees that they'll drop out later?
-this particular moral dilemma usually gets yanked out of my hands and they get passed along without my approval. I do not see the point in passing a student along that is reading on a 2nd grade level in the 4th grade.
Do I kick this student out of my class because he's disrupting everyone else's education when he is, by law, allowed a free and appropriate public education? OR do I let him continue staying in my class with the knowledge that the other 19 are not getting the education they deserve?
-My current reality and ethical dilemma I'm trying to come to terms with. When I come up with a solution, I'll let you know. XD

Please ping! I get distracted easily.

I love traveling around by bus or train, honestly. It's healthier using your own two legs a bit more anyway!
Also, as it turns out, this bit wasn't even meant to be my homework. Information got mixed up and this is meant to be discussed during class NEXT week, with everyone together. Rather than writing it out alone But she liked my papers of car rants.
@Miss Sandman:
Aww I'm happy for you!! Soon!
@Hachi:
Yeah, I actually watched a video somewhere saying that its better to not recycle at all, than to recycle incorrectly. Because of the issue we've had with china denying our recycling and its becoming too much for workers to have to sift through it all.
I just want to stop using single use plastics all together~
@songlord:
That's a tricky one indeed. Maybe the counselor can advise you on how to help her while still showing fairness?
@Mousy:
That kinda makes me think of my housemate's daughter. She's 10 but she can barely write or spell and her reading is pretty rough. Her teachers become really impatient and rude toward her, not helping the situation at all. I'm sure they probably face the similar dilemma "should I hold her back or not?"
But on the other hand, she has a mother who is not very encouraging. She's very passive aggressive while the kid is trying to get through homework, and just keeps complaining "just get it done so I can go to bed" and "you spelled that wrong. come on, just get it right" kind of things like... I suspect the kid is just dyslexic and under a lot of stress that her mom piles on. Then her inability to focus comes in..
I wonder how similar this case could be to your student? How are they learning at home, what kind of rudeness or distractions are they dealing with?

I don't really encounter many ethical dilemmas outside of the ones connected to everyday living, though I figure those are more than enough.
Eat things you know are bad for the environment and your body, spend more than you can afford and risk running out of money, or just don't eat enough to get through the day? Great choices. Throwing things that could be recycled into the garbage because recycling isn't available and you don't have the time, space, or energy to collect it yourself and take it to the nearest recycling facility (seriously, does anyone do that?). Work for a huge corporation that screws over employees, destroys small businesses, and sells products that support all manner of unethical practices... or don't have a job because those big corporations are your only option if you want to be able to put that food that's so bad for the environment on your table and live another day? Even so you're still not gonna be able to pay rent no matter what. "Better than nothing" is the default state of being. Doing things you wish you didn't have to because you have no other option is all there is. Is it even a dilemma at this point, when there's not really any alternative?
When it comes to things I have some form of control over, I don't really have many issues. I'm sure I've had to make hard decisions before, but I generally know what I'm doing is the right thing for me and anyone else potentially involved, so it doesn't feel like an ethical problem. But for the things I'm trapped with that I know are wrong and have no say in? That's an everyday struggle that I just have to tune out until I have the means to do something about any of it.

AKA Count Trashula
Cheating. It's fertile ground as far as ethical dilemmas go. You can find all sides of arguments on it very, very easily.
