That, unfortunately, might be generational.
As time goes on, I notice more people realize the importance of friendships, both online and off.
Since they themselves likely had them.
The older folks simply didn't have that, and may not always understand it.

Maybe it's better to have very few really close friends than a bunch of superficial ones.
