Maddie was semi-pouting when he didn't seem to hear it at first, then smiled when he confirmed hearing something. She followed him to the door and waited for him to go outside before following. It was so tiny! Maddie slowly knelt beside and examined it when Clint pat it's head. To be so friendly.. Someone might've dumped him, and that thought easily got under Maddie's skin. Slowly and carefully, she picked up the kitten and held it close to her. "Poor little guy.. You're shivering." She comes softly, lightly petting its head. "I bet you're hungry too.." It needs at her, earning a giggle. "Hey.. You've barely got your milk teeth.." She frowned. The kitten suddenly wiggled free and scampered off as if frightened, but not by them.
"So this where you've been hiding, demon child." A voice sounded nearby. Maddie froze and slowly rose to her feet. Why now? Didn't these people know when to quit?

"He's so tiny. We should bring him inside and see if he'll eat anything." Clint suggested but he didn't need to since it looked like Maddie was already thinking ahead. She had even managed to pick the kitten up, which was more than Clint had done. Who could have left it here though? And why? It was much too young, probably still needed to be with it's mother and instead it was here, lost, confused and scared. When the kitten managed to break free and run off, Clint only looked confused, why had it run off? That's when he heard a voice and quickly rose to his feet to see a person standing nearby. Well now, this couldn't be good. What to do? Without really thinking, he pulled Maddie back inside the house and closed the front door, locking it. "Well shite..." He muttered and looked out the window. "If you want to talk, we can talk but you stay out there, and we'll stay in here and we'll talk. If you don't want to talk, then don't waste our time. We're very busy right now and I'd rather not bug the cops with a phone call." Clint warned, although he had a feeling this wasn't going to work.
Maddie has little time to react when Clint suddenly led her inside the house and locked the door behind them. The woman only smiled, and ran a hand a hand through her curly hair. "Fine, I'll humor you." She spoke clearly. Maddie slowly went over to the window and peeked through the curtain, her nerves were already shot. Why was she here? "Aurelie.." She murmured softly, masking her fear.
"Madeline, how many people have to get hurt?" She spoke, kneling and getting the kitten to come to her and gently picked it up when it did. "When will you submit?" The woman asked .
"Madeline, how many people have to get hurt?" She spoke, kneling and getting the kitten to come to her and gently picked it up when it did. "When will you submit?" The woman asked .
Oh wow, this had actually worked?! So this was Aurelie, the leader of the cult and now she was here. How had she found her? Clint didn't look too happy, but he remained calm. If this person just wanted to talk, then he would let them just talk. As long as no one was getting hurt, he wouldn't do anything stupid. Besides, she was outside, they were inside, and the door was locked. Even though the question was for Maddie, Clint had a question of his own to make. "What exactly do you want with Maddie anyway? I mean, you and your people won't leave her alone, so what is it exactly? Why do you feel the need to get her to submit? Submit to what?" He asked the woman.
Maddie was quiet. She was more worried about the kitten really. There was no telling what was that woman was capable of. The woman rose an eyebrow at the man's voice. "My.. Have you decided to take in a stray? To what is your concern? She knows what I speak of.. All that I ask is for her to meet me, in private- unless she wants someone else to get hurt." Aurelie spoke casually. She was messing with Maddie's head, and she didn't like it. "Don't hurt him.." The woman couldn't really hear her, but by looking at her expression she didn't have to. "Madeline, I'm not a monster, dear. If you want.him, come take him. You know where to find me. " She spoke, then started walking off.
Clint didn't like this, but he didn't want to do anything that might be seen as a bad move. When the woman was gone, he sighed and looked at Maddie. "Well that was a pleasant conversation. Are you actually going to go meet her?" He asked, crossing his arms across his chest. There was no doubt in his mind that if she left, he'd probably not see her again. "I don't think she's going to be alone Mads. She might have her people waiting to...I don't know, hurt you and take you away somewhere. Maybe I'm wrong but I can't help but worry that if you go, it's not going to end well." Clint explained, but he knew he coudln't force her to stay put either.
Maddie didn't know what to do.. "She's baiting me." She murmured, glancing at Clint. Clearly unsure of herself. She would either do something to the kitten, or do nothing and actually take care of it. "Aurelie might not do anything to him.. But.. I don't know." She sank to her knees and lowered her head. "I don't doubt that her people will be there. I hate her.. I hate that woman.. She's always doing this. Trying to get to me.." She said quietly. Had she touched a nerve she couldn't ignore?
Clint knelt down beside Maddie and gently pat her shoulder. "Well...I don't know her personally but she said she wasn't a monster. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I don't think she'd actually hurt the little dude." He said to her. It was hard to tell though. Maybe that's what she wanted them to think, that she wouldn't hurt it. Maybe he was being selfish, but he didn't want her to go meet up with that woman. He wanted to keep her safe, he couldn't keep her safe if she just left. "If you want to go though, I won't stop you."
Maddie glanced at Clint. He didn't want her to go.. Did he? It wasn't hard to tell. He didn't even want her dealing with those people anymore.. He was trying to help her keep her away from them. Away from that woman.. But.. Maddie shook her head. "I can't. If I go there's no doubt I probably won't come back.. I'd be giving her exactly what she wants." Maddie spoke quietly. She had to believe the kitten would be alright. She had to.
Oh good, she wouldn't go. As much as he wanted to hug her in joy, he didn't. He didn't think it was a good idea to be happy right now. "I just hope we didn't make a big mistake." He voiced quietly. Would that woman come back if Maddie didn't go to see her? Would she be back later today? Or would she come tomorrow? What if she were here while he was at work? "Maddie, does that woman break into houses to get to you?" He asked nervously. "I can take a sick day tomorrow if you want. It's okay. I can stay or...I can come home early tomorrow if you'd like. You know...just to...make sure .." He frowned, he sounded clingy didn't he? She'd probably think he was being just that.
Maddie slowly reached her arms around the back of his neck in a hug. She couldn't help it.. She couldn't stop herself from hugging him. She was scared, but she shook her head lightly. "I don't know.. I don't think so.." Maddie murmured quietly. "No.. You don't need to do that.. I'll be alright. " She said quietly, slowly releasing the hug. He needed to go to work. It was sweet that he was willing to watch over her, but she needed to show him that she would be alright. Fear couldn't control her.
Clint wrapped his arms around her in a hug, "I'm sorry if I seem clingy. It's just.." He sighed and leaned back against the wall. "I just don't want you getting hurt." He explained, looking at her. He knew she wanted the kitten though, it gave him another idea. He woudln't say anything though, it would be a surprise. "Alright, but if anything happens I want you to call me alright? I'll write my cell number down for you and you can call me from the house phone whenever you want. I'll always answer it okay?"
Maddie watched him as he leaned his back against the wall. "It's alright.. I don't think you're being clingy. You care. " She murmured quietly. She nodded when he mentioned leaving his number and wanting her to call him. "I'll call you, I promise." Maddie said calmly, holding out her pinkie for him and offered him a small smile. Clint was. someone who .meant a lot to her. She only hoped .he wasn't thinking something rash.
Clint smiled seeing her hold out her pinky for him to wrap his around. And so he did. His pinky wrapped around hers then pulled his hand back. "Alright Mads, you pinky promised so you can't take it back. Or like we said when were were kids, no take backsies." He said and chuckled. His thoughts went to the kitten, hopefully it was okay. "Do you think she'll come back?" He asked her after a while. There was no need to live in fear though, they had to go on with their lives. He'd make them dinner in a few and then maybe they'd be able to get some sleep later.
Maddie actually giggled some. "No take backsies." She repeated quietly, sitting on her butt. She was quiet for a moment when he spoke and glanced outside through the curtains. "This won't be the last time we see her.. I can almost guarantee that." She said before slowly standing and glancing at Clint. "It's okay though. We'll deal with it when the time comes. " She said calmly. She wasn't a scared child anymore. Maddie wasn't alone anymore. Aurelie couldn't say that anymore.
So she would come back. Would she come back alone? Or would she bring some of her followers to help her this time? Clint had to smile at how brave she sounded. It was admirable. She wasn't crying anymore, she didn't look or sound frightened. "That's more like it Mads. Let's not worry about her right now. Instead, I'm going to wash the dishes and do some laundry. Umm, do you want to do your own laundry first?" He asked her. He didn't mind. It would be a little strange if he were handling her clothes wouldn't it?
Maddie rubbed the back of her head some and shook her head at the offer to do her laundry first. "Nah, go a head. I don't really have that much to wash.." She said with a small smirk. Hell, she was still in pjs! Maddie would wait a day or two to do wash. She had a shower this morning.. Maddie thought of something she could. "I guess I'll just read more of that book." She said with a light smirk before heading down the hall to her room, then sat down on the bed and opened up the book she was reading. She couldn't live in fear.
"Oh right, the book. Enjoy!" he told her and watched her leave. She still reminded him of the little girl he first met out during recess. Good times. She wasn't much different though from then. All that changed was that she was older now but she was still a nice person. "Alright Clint, get to work. Just because you're done with work for the day doesn't mean you're done with all the work." He told himself and walked to the kitchen to wash up the dishes. It wasn't that many so it wasn't long before he was at the end of the hall tossing his clothes in the wash. He made sure to leave hers in the basket and not touch it. While the laundry was getting done, he stepped outside and grabbed the mail then came back and sat at the table to look through it.
Maddie glanced up from the book and just outside her door, a small smile forming in her lips. He hadn't changed much since their younger days.. Only now he wasn't as clumsy. He grew up into a fine man, and the thought made her cheeks heat up a bit. Pushing the thoughts aside, she sighed. She always looked up to him back then, and even now, but did she like him? Not anymore than a brother, or a friend. She lowered her eyes back to the book to start reading again.
It was mostly junk mail and a few bills. Nothing of excitement of course. Bills were opened carefully and read in silence, the sound of his phone ringing grabbed his attention. Walking over, he picked it up and leaned against the wall as he read through his bill. "Hello?" He said. "Oh hey. Right now? Umm..." It was a friend from his college days calling if they could come over and hang out for a bit. He hadn't seen them in years though but they always made time to hang out whenever they could. "Gee, I'd love to Jess but uhh..I can't. I really can't. Why? W-well because I uhh.." A good excuse, what could he say? "I'm not dressed. W-well I mean I am. I mean, I'm not naked or anything no...but I'm not dressed to go have a drink. I have like...a ton of bills and stuff so I really can't go out Jess. Super sorry though. Maybe next time?" He said, hoping she'd believe him.
