I’m not sure how the mechanics of the crates work... Even if you click on an item you want, it can randomly be the rare instead of the item you clicked on?

Yes as star says. You will always get the DI you selected. But if you are lucky you will also get the rare along with it.

So basically, you have an option to choose which one from the 2 common one that you want. And every time you open a crate you have 15% chance to get the rare crate item with the common one that you choose.
And if you are unlucky, after 10 tries of opening the same crate and didnt get any rare. You will 100% get a rare crate item in your 10th crate
