@Tuijp: When I was younger we always went to my parents friends for the 4th. They would shoot off bottle rockets and stuff... while drinking. Needless to say we stopped going after they knocked one down and it shot across the lawn at people.

@Selaphi: we have containers in town where you dump your old clothes in. Some get transported topoor countries and other sell the clothes and they get money for it per kg.
One year, my brother and one of his friends thought it was fun to drop some fireworks in one of those containers. The fire department had to come, cut it open, to put it out.
Some places here the city organises the fireworks and the citizens aren’t allowed to set it off themselves. Saves a lot of work for the fire fighters, doctors and nurses, police and the people who have to clean up the days after.
@Tuijp: Yikes. That's awful. We had to cross state lines where I was to get fireworks for the longest time but I think they changed the law back home. I will stick to watching the professionals. I'm not trying to lose my hand.... And that's a great point. I think of all the emergency room visits people likely have due to negligence and it's just not worth it to me. I would rather not make someone elses day miserable.
