Forums General Chit-Chat Learn to count, health app

Donator — Winchester Posted 6 years ago ( 2019/02/10 15:08:09 )

I have a health app and a step count app on my phone.
Every morning, I take my dog for a walk of 2.3 km (1.4 miles). Then, in the afternoon, we take another walk of around 5 km (3.1 miles).

Today, it was very quiet and there was hardly any wind (we had a small storm the last few days), so we went for an extra round. That round is nearly 9 km (5.5 miles) total. With the 2.3 km this morning, it would be 11.3 km (7 miles).

I just checked both apps on my phone. The step count says I walked 9.8 km (6 miles) today and the health app says 9.7 km. >.>

Ever get annoyed with apps like this?

My dad and I both have the same step app and we never have the same amount of km when we are walking.

@vengeance: maybe it’s because one of you makes smaller steps than the other, so they have to make more steps to walk the same distance?

@Tuijp: Could be. But sometimes I walk more and sometimes my dad.

@Totalanimefan: stupid things
Pokemon go on my old phone was fun. The gps on that one wasn’t too good and would bounce me all over the place. I could sit on the couch and see myself run all over the Pokemon go map.

@Totalanimefan: it did when it was just around the neighbourhood, but not any further than that. Shame, because it thought I ran to Amsterdam a few times and that’s 50 km away.

I've never used anything like that; not sure how such an app would even really work. How does it know you're taking steps? o_o

    I could be wrong, but I think most apps use your phone's gyroscope to count your steps. So depending on where your phone is, along with how strong your steps are, it could be measuring incorrectly.

@Totalanimefan: Pokemon go thought I did.
My phone also made Facebook ask me a few times if I was in Amsterdam while I was not and, when I was, it had no idea.
@Uncledaddy: see what wisp said
@Wisp: I always have it in my left jeans pocket. Most of the time, it measures well.
But, with the 2 apps (health app and step count) it often gives 2 different distances and I even connected them.
