Emily woke up to her alarm screaming at her. This was her fourth and final alarm, the one that always got her out of bed. She moaned as she reached for her phone, seeing the same time as every weekend, 11:50 am.

Her notifications were already at seven. Three of the seven were from Amelia, Emily's best friend. One was a reminder that today Emily and Amelia are going to the fair. The other notifications were just spam.

She stretched as she got out of bed and tidied the blankets, then headed to her closet to get her outfit for the day out. Emily liked to keep things organized. She was always planning everything down to the last detail if she could. She liked to be in control of her life. Her phone buzzed as she went into the bathroom to shower and do her makeup, and it buzzed again while she was getting dressed.

By the time Emily finally decided to check her messages from Amelia, she had 9 to read.

Amelia sat in her living room on the couch, the curtains wide open to let in the natural light. She held her phone in her hands and was typing away at the screen.

10:02 Emi, are you awake yet?

She passed the time browsing tumblr and instagram, hoping her best friend would respond soon. She had read about this cool new attraction in their town, a traveling haunted house. Amelia had seen an ad for it on facebook, and it turns out this was the last weekend before it was going away. She knew Emily would be against changing their plans last minute, but she really wanted to go.

10:46 Emi! I gotta tell you something! Wake up sleepy head!

Amelia was starting to run out of things to do, and she kept thinking more and more about the haunted house. She hoped so much that emily would be down with going.

11:31 Please respond as soon as you wake up okay?!
11:56 I know you are awake, you always wake up at the same time. If you don't reply soon, I'm coming over!
11:57 Look, I know you like to plan things ahead, but there's a change in our plans today okay? I wanted to tell you as soon as I could so you wouldn't freak out. Please don't be mad.

She sighed and watched her phone for any sign of Emily. Nothing.

12:01 Emi, are you mad? I'm going to come over okay.

Amelia threw her shoes on, put on her sunglasses, and grabbed her car keys. She typed out another message before starting her car, a baby blue VW Beetle.

12:03 I'm headed over right now. I'll see you in 10 minutes.

As Amelia pulled up to Emily's house, she noticed the light on in the bedroom. The rest of the house was dark. She walked up to the door, and began knocking.

12:14 Emi, answer the door! I'm here! I really need to get my own key lol

No answer. She wanted a minute, then tried again.

12:15 Are you home?

Emily scrolled through the messages, reading them slowly at first. When she got to the 11:57 message, her heart dropped.

No Amelia... you're always changing our plans. Don't do this to me again.

She continued to read the messages until she got to the one marked 12:03.

Crap, she's at the door isn't she?!

That's when she heard the knocking. Emily rushed to the front door and opened it, letting her best friend inside.

"Hi Amelia, thanks for blowing up my phone this morning! Do you want something to drink?" Emily walked to the kitchen, waiting for Amelia to follow her.

Amelia was in the middle of knocking when the door opened and she was greeted by Emily.

"I would love a drink! You still have any of that green tea?" She said as she slipped her shoes off and left them by the door. She followed Emily to the kitchen, eager to talk about the change in plans, hoping that Emily wouldn't be too upset. She decided to wait a few minutes before bringing it up.

Emily reached into the fridge and pulled out a chilled container of green tea.

"I sure do, it's the last bottle, but I don't mind sharing it. Go ahead and make yourself comfy."

She was trying to sound normal, but she was slightly irritated by her morning routine being interrupted, plus their plans were apparently changing. She knew whatever it was Amelia wanted to do, she wouldn't be able to just say no. Today was to celebrate Amelia's 4th year in remission. She handed Amelia her glass of tea, then decided to just jump straight into it.

"So you had something you wanted to talk about?"

Amelia took her tea with surprise as Emily asked her the question. She didn't her to just ask like that. Amelia could sense the annoyance in Emi's voice, but she knew it wasn't so bad that she would say no. There was a good chance Emily was going to say yes to her best friend on this big day. Amelia took a deep breath.

"Okay, so please don't be mad at me Emi." She paused for a second, choosing her words carefully. "I know we had planned on going to the fair and eating a bunch of junk food until our stomachs hurt, but I found out about this really cool thing that's only in town until tomorrow." She stopped again, trying to read Emily's face.

"I think you'll really like it, even if it's a change in our plans. It's something you've talked about wanting to do for a few years now. Are you mad yet? I can't tell."

Emily sat quietly, listening to Amelia speak. She felt knots in her stomach as she anticipated Amelia's plans being some grand scheme to do something crazy today. Amelia kept pausing her words, which drove Emily crazy. It was one of her few pet peeves about her best friend.

"Amelia, I'm not mad... I'm just... I'm nervous, okay? You know how I get. Please just tell me what it is so I can stop internally freaking out. You are dragging this out way too much."

Amelia blushed a little, realizing she was torturing her best friend. Her mouth started moving incredibly fast, blurting the words out in rapid fire speed.

"Right! Sorry! Okay so there's a haunted house that pops up in different cities and stuff, and it's here right now. It's supposed to be super creepy, and if you make it through the whole thing you get your entry fee back, a $100 giftcard, a tshirt, and your name on the wall of screams. I realllly wanna go, Emi. Please, can we go?!" She sighed in relief, finally getting it all out.

As a reward to herself, she drank a sip of her green tea. It was refreshing and made her feel really good about the chances of Emily saying yes.

She soaked in the words, listening carefully as her friend talked at what seemed to be 1000 words per minute. By the end of it, she felt relieved, but also still anxious that they were doing something different. Emily lifted her own glass of tea up to her mouth and took a drink, slowly, thinking everything over. When she made her mind, she began to speak.

"Is there a website for it? I'd like to read more about it first before we go."

Her face was flushed, she could feel it, and she worried Amelia was going to feel bad about it. She didn't want her best friend to feel guilty for wanting to do something different. Emily's anxiety really was a problem.

Amelia pulled out her phone and typed in the name of the haunted house: One Thousand Horrors. A dark webpage came up with a picture of an old spooky looking building. It looked like it was three stories high, but the website said it had five floors of terror. She passed the phone over to Emily.

"I'm not sure if they use an existing house or if they built one for it, but it looks so creepy, right?! They only stay around for about a month before they move to a new location. There's a page to see a picture of the wall of screams, where signatures are. There's not even that many on the walls, it must be so scary!" She watched eagerly as Emily looked at the website.

"They have a lot of great reviews too. People saying they couldn't sleep for a week and stuff."

The first thing Emily noticed about the website was that it looked like it was made in 2002. The site felt ancient, with the most basic HTML. It was clear that whoever created that thing didn't have much experience. There were pictures of the house, but nothing inside besides the "wall of screams" Amelia mentioned. It looked like a long concrete hallway that reminded Emily of the tunnel at the haunted hospital, Waverly Hills.

Most of the other pictures looked more like stock photos than anything else. There was a page for reviews, but they looked fake. Emily was becoming very skeptical about the whole thing, but she could still see the excitement in Amelia's eyes. Emily was going to crush it.

"Amy, I have a lot of questions, but there's one that's really bothering me." Emily continued to scroll through the site, eager to find more information. "These pictures cannot be real. Like, how could they move that giant concrete hallway to every single location for the wall of screams. Not to mention the costs if they poured that thing. I've never seen anything like it besides that creepy famous hospital."

Emily took a sip of her tea, waiting for Amelia to start up with her theories on the house. When nothing came, she continued on.

"Also, why have we never heard of it if there's so many great reviews? Shouldn't it be famous or something? There's no reviews from the media, it's all random people. Most of the reviews sound like the same person wrote them. Look at these three, they use all of the same words, just in a different order."

She sighed, her internal voice telling her to drop it and to apologize, but she couldn't. None of this made sense to her.

"Look Amy, I don't mean to hurt your feelings... but this sounds fake as hell. I'm looking at the map now, and it's in the middle of nowhere. What if we get out there and there's nothing? What if we get out there and it's some creeps who set up a trap or something? We don't have anything besides pepper spray to protect us. I don't think this is a good idea."

Amelia listened to the words patiently. Each point that Emily brought up, Amelia had an argument for it. Although somewhat ridiculous, she still had explanations that could work. She wanted so bad to open her mouth and argue, but she held herself back. Emily often went on logical rants, and she often didn't mean to sound so harsh when the words came out. Thoughts were running through her head, but she kept them all to herself as Emily kept talking.

The wall of screams could just be painted to look like concrete. Maybe it's just a giant banner or something that's pasted onto the walls. Maybe it's really nice looking foam, like the stuff they use in movies.

Maybe the haunted house is newer, or they change the name of it to throw people off. Maybe the reviews are false, but that doesn't mean the place isn't real!

Emily mentioned something about a trap, but Amelia was no longer listening.

It can't be fake because-

"Tomas has seen it." She didn't realize she was speaking out loud now. Her cheeks reddened a little and she repeated the full sentence out loud. "It can't be fake because Tomas has seen the house set up. I thought maybe it was fake as well, and I know he lives out that way, so I asked if he could check it out for me. He went during the day while it was closed. There's a small sign set up about a mile before you turn off to get to it. He drove back as far as he could until he came to a gate that said closed until nightfall, but he could see the house. It's real."

Amelia felt good getting those words out. She knew her friend meant well, but it felt good to prove that she wasn't a fool. She had already checked the place out, because she knew Emily would have objections, and Amelia didn't blame her. It was the smart thing to do. It was the Emily thing to do.

"Tomas has seen it."

[ They had met Tomas when Amelia was in the hospital. She was on her last round of chemo, and they were sitting in the commons playing Go Fish, trying to pass the time. Phones weren't allowed in that area. A nurse escorted a long, lanky boy with curly brown hair into the room. His hair covered his eyes. He was wearing a black hoodie that looked three sizes too big for him. The nurse asked if he was okay with being there, and he just nodded slowly, then she asked Emily and Amelia if they were okay with it. Apparently the doctors wanted him to socialize, and they knew Amelia and Emily would take to Tomas quickly.

He was odd, and very quiet, but Emily liked him for that. Even though he didn't answer many of their questions, you could tell he was listening to every word they said as if their words were gold. Emily developed a crush on him before Amelia's treatment was over, and Amelia became really close friends with him. By the end of her treatment, he was talking to them regularly. ]

Emily felt like a huge jerk.

"Oh Amy, I'm so sorry. I guess I let my anxiety get to me." She looked down at her tea, embarrassed to face her kind friend. She knew Amelia wouldn't be mad at her, but she still felt shame for being so pessimistic.

"We can go, if you still want to. I'm down. What are we going to do in the meantime, since they don't open until nightfall?"

She had a slight grin on her face, Emily's apology washing over her and cleaning away any disappointment she had. It always felt good to beat Emily's anxiety, to overcome something that held them both back.

"Yes! Emily you are totally the best. I knew you'd say yes. It will be so much fun, I promise." Amelia was jumping up and down as she spoke, excitement spilling from her. "I was thinking we could grab a coffee and talk for a while, then go see a spooky movie to set the mood for tonight. Oh, and one more thing..." This time Amelia paused on purpose. She was pushing Emily's anxiety, but she knew she'd be happy to hear this news. "Tomas is coming with us to the house. He's totally into it," a smile crept across her face as she planned the next words carefully, "almost as much as you are into him."

Emily's face flushed red as soon as the words left Amelia's lips. She turned away quickly, trying to hide her embarrassment from her best friend, but it was too late.

"Amy! It's not that serious! He's just kinda cute, okay?!" She tried her hardest to sound sincere, but the words were heavy, and she fumbled to speak them with any persuasion. She recollected herself and turned back to face her friend, her eyes still looking down. There was no point in lying to her friend.

"I am glad he's coming with us... just in case something bad happens, you know?"

She laughed lightly, careful not to push too many of Emily's buttons. Amelia knew Emily had a crush on Tomas since the day they met in the hospital. Amelia had been throwing questions at Tomas, trying to get any information out of him that she could for her friend, but he hadn't answered very many. After being released from the hospital, Tomas didn't leave his house often. They mostly talked online. Maybe this time her two friends would finally hook up. Should could tell Tomas had feelings for Emily, even though he was really good at hiding them. He was good at hiding a lot of things.

"Suuuure Emi, whatever you say."

She finished her tea, then walked over to wash the glass out and put it away.

"I promise, nothing bad will happen, but it will be nice to have a guy with us for protection! Maybe when you get scared, he'll hold you!" She turned and winked as she delivered that last line.

Tomas holding me would be nice... The thought crept into her mind, then she shook it away.

"Whatever, you're the one that's going to be scared! I bet you won't even make it to the end!" She said this teasingly, trying to change the subject. "Let's get out of here, I'm ready to grab a latte. Do you even have a movie picked out yet? I don't want it to be like last time where you couldn't decide and we ended up having to watch that terrible killer lamp movie!"

Amelia chuckled, "Hey, The Flickering wasn't THAT bad of a movie!"

She walked to the door, then slipped her shoes on. She grabbed her keys from her pocket and dangled them in the air.

"I'll drive! Do you want to stop at the Starbucks, or that cute little cat cafe?" Amelia didn't even know why she was asking this, she already knew what Emily was going to answer.
