While I was getting my degree though, the teacher did correct my use of 'their' because I used it as a gender neutral term. Apparently you can't do that.

Yeah I had to explain that their, they, them can all be used in cases where you didn't know the gender of whoever's being discussed.

I had to pull up historical uses of it as a gender neutral term, it's not some new thing. The context of the argument is, we were supposed to write an analysis of a popular song. At the time the only song I was willing to use was some Adele thing, I hate all top 10 pop. Anyway I used 'they, their, them' to describe the person the song was about, as Adele did not specify what the person's gender was. So you know it would be transphobic or homophobic. My teacher decided if a song is sung and written by a lady, then it's about a dude.
