@PurpdaBurpPurp: No worries! If you don't manage to enter, I'll come 'round and pay ya with volts or something for some art later =)

Also, how long have you been working with watercolours? =)

@Amber Lynne: Awe y'all are too nice here >w<
And hmm I would say for a very long time but I recently picked up at it again. That was like 2 or 3 years ago, I quit because I found it too difficult back then I guess

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Awwww
At least you picked it up again!
~<3

Do you prefer blocks or tubes?

Report

Voltie Posted 5 years ago ( 2020/01/17 03:42:39 )

@Amber Lynne: I only have tubes right now but I may have to buy some blocks in the future. I have two sets of tubes; Reeves and Thomas Kinkade. Some of those tubes the paint inside completely went solid hard. And idk how to fix that :/

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Firstly, I'm not fond of Reeves, myself.
Secondly, Kinkade I've heard can be really good for budget paints.
Thirdly, WATER
Seriously!
Cut open the tubes, take the dried blocks out and put it somewhere else. (Get a small container for 'em of course) And add water.
Watercolours are paints that you can reactivate! Waaaaater~<3

I mean, the palette I use (Royal Talens Van Gogh 18+2 set) I get the 10ml tubes to replace the colours I run out of, and just fill the spot for 'em... and once they dry, just... use 'em like the rest =)
Works perfectly ~<3

@Amber Lynne: ooh! I'm gonna try that then~
Tbh I don't use much of Reeves also, I only use it when I'm mixing colours. Kinkade is awesome idk much about the brand since my mother gave it to me as a gift but I get more variety of the colours than Reeves. If i can I'll avoid mixing anything to get the colour I want which maybe I should get some blocks set I saw online that has so many variety of colours *q*

And any helpful tips for first timer like me? I may have a little bit of experience but I still struggle with watercolour TwT

@PurpdaBurpPurp: .... Mix your colours.
Seriously.

I mean, ok. I don't mix my colours as much as I should either (I do a lot of spacey/sky stuffs, so I don't really need to... I work with what I've got) but the few portraits I've done, none of my palettes have the perfect colours... so I've had to mix.

You'll have to learn it too.
You'll get much better colour control if you're mixing [s]And I've never seen a good skin tone in any set[/b]

Beyond that... make sure you're using good paper.
Crappy thin paper will not play nice with water DX

@Amber Lynne: Hehe I guess there's always no shortcuts towards that :viosweat:
My mixing skills... is well not so bad just a lot of trial and error and wasted paint sometimes
I just bought some new watercolour paper and so far is holding the water very well but I do have that bad habit of not giving enough time to let the paint to dry and putting too much water until it gets that bad stain. Not sure if it's the paper or me [most likely me]

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Could be a mix of both, actually.

CansonXL, for instance, isn't the best for laods of water on it.
But Strathmore tends to handle more water better.
(The watercolour paper options for them both, of course)

I've heard that Bee Paper is really good, and that Arches... Cold? pressed (Cold, I think.) is pretty much the best you can get.
My wallet cries when I think of trying Arches though. That shit ain't cheap.

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Compltely understandable!
I have both Canson and Strathmore.

Also, when it comes to Canson, just... you gotta be more patient.
don't overload it with water. ^ ^;;
It's a thing I've run into before too. Too much water on the paper.
Totally fun. > <

@Amber Lynne: Yeah that's what I learn on my last art piece... I ended up discarding it and started over again. Patience is not my best trait but I'm trying lol xD

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Patience is so not fun.
BUT!
If you want to speed up drying time - assuming you don't have puddles of water - grab a hair dryer!
Seriously.
It actually can help speed it up a lot. Still takes a bit, depending on how wet the paper is, but it speed it up!

@Amber Lynne: Ah that's a neat way to do :3
I'll give that a try sometime. Right now atm, maybe is freakin winter here and is cold, I don't usually have to wait too long for the paint to dry. And I learn from other artists that I should work on other parts of the drawing while waiting.
Watching how other artists use watercolour on youtube really helps a lot ^^

@PurpdaBurpPurp: Oh totally!
Just make sure to not work on an area right next to where is drying. Colour runs suck. Lol.
