@mdom: They aren't, it's just a more uniform brightness so your eyes adjust to it and it makes everything seem brighter. '3'

Same reason a lot of nightlights actually make it harder to see in a dark room. One bright source makes everything else seem darker in comparison, and make your pupils contract more. '3'

@Vii: Cocaine was quite popular back in the day. Pre-War on Drugs, a lot of things like that were quite popular. Most of these things started use as just regular over-the-counter drugs. '3'
