Happy to hear the young girl's voice, Raisa opened the door with a sunny smile on her face. "Good morning, Miss Maddie," she greeted her, and then answered her question. "Master Ezra is downstairs, yes. Whether he is fully awake or not depends on whether he's already down half the coffee pot." She chuckled good naturedly. "Would you like to join us for breakfast? We have eggs and bagels and I've got batter to make fresh pancakes if you'd like some."
In the dining room, Ezra was slowly regaining his senses, enough to properly assess what was going on around him. He looked in the direction of the hallway from which Raisa and Maddie would appear, wondering if Maddie would join him for breakfast.

Anyone walking past the girls that night would have wondered what they were up to, with the way they were whispering conspiratorially to each other as they waited for Allen. Lillian offered stern tips on safety measures and how best to bolt in case anything went wrong. Ella offered words of encouragement, and strict instructions to Lillian to be on her best behaviour, apprehension aside. Adira repeatedly went through the list of her belongings and the location of each item in her head, while fearfully looking out for any sign of her aunt or cousins. The two minutes that it took for them to finally spot Allen sitting on his bench felt like two hours to her, so his presence was an overwhelming relief.
Lillian was the first one to spot him, and she alerted the other two, and they quietly made their way over to his bench.
"Hello, Allen," Adira greeted him. "The three of us are here." The other two also greeted him similarly, letting him hear their voices and confirm their presence in front of him.

Raisa usually woke a while before Ezra did, and the soft sounds of cooking could be heard from the kitchen every time he opened the door to his room in the mornings. Ezra was disciplined in his life and work, but that didn't mean he found waking up in the morning easy. It took a combination of a warm shower and a coffee to fully wake him up and turn him into a semblance of the person that he was usually known to be. Only Raisa and his mother knew the zombie that he was before he'd gotten the chance to do those things.
Raisa had debated whether to check on Maddie or let her sleep, and was still mulling over it when Ezra entered the kitchen and made a beeline for the coffee pot. "I'll go check on her," she finally decided, walking by a half disoriented Ezra. "The poor thing's hand..."
She went over to Maddie's door and knocked, three sharp raps. "Miss Maddie? Are you awake?"

The girls said their goodbyes to Allen and left, making their plans to make sure Adira was out on time and able to make it to the dinner without incurring her aunt's wrath. When Adira got home, she was relieved to find out that her aunt had fallen asleep early, presumably from another evening of drinking. Her cousins tended to retreat into their respective rooms to do their own thing whenever that happened, which meant she wouldn't run into them either.
Her night was to get busy from here on, in spite of the peace from her family members' temporary absence. She began to get the last of her clothes out one by one and fold them into neat stacks. Most of her things had already been moved to Lilly's room, with a few hastily stashed at Ella's when her aunt had happened to stumble along the path leading to Lilly's house. She picked up a final picture in a frame, gazing at it softly for a second before stowing it away in her bag. Her room was completely empty. And from now on, it would stay that way. She would crash at either Ella's or Lillian's place depending on where her aunt was, and move into Allen's home the day she started working for him.
The next day, on cue, the girls stood in the park, waiting for Allen.

((Did a bit of backreading and thought about how difficult I want to make it for Allen to find out whose daughter she is, answer is yes XD))

Ezra was left to watch as Maddie turned in for the night, wondering if he could have said or done anything differently to prevent her retreat into herself. Raisa emerged from the kitchen, pecan pie in hand, and noticed him standing there alone. "Where's Miss Maddie?" she asked, curious. "Did she go to the bathroom?"
Ezra kept looking in the direction of Maddie's room for a while before answering. "I was thoughtless," he replied with a sad smile. "Need to remember to be careful with what I say to her." He sighed and turned to his housekeeper. "Maybe we could let that stay in the fridge for now. We'll eat it together tomorrow."
Raisa gave him a kind smile. "You have a good heart, Master Ezra," she said. "I'm sure Miss Maddie sees it too."
The two turned in for the night as well, with Ezra staying up a little to think over everything that had happened that evening.

((MY GOSH I'M SO SORRY! I'd love to continue this, sorry for the two year wait T_T Thanks for bumping so patiently <3))
Whatever he'd imagined her response to be, this was not one of them. Her words about the news lodged themselves in his brain in a way that he couldn't quite understand. But he couldn't analyze why, because in the next moment, she'd stood up to leave.
Alarmed, Ezra stood up to try to stop Maddie. "Maddie, wait, please!" he said, taking a few steps towards her. "I didn't mean to put down your work or anything, I just wanted to let you know you're welcome here." He paused, considering his next words carefully. "All I wanted to say was, you really are welcome here. I can't claim to know what you've been through and how much you've had to suffer. But I believe you're a good person, and I would like to help you."

A make shift dog house....
Ezra had to do everything in his power to stop himself from pinching the bridge of his nose in tension. Everything this woman was telling him about her situation.... it seemed beyond dire. She clearly needed help. Help that he was willing to give. He skated over the palm reading thing, since he didn't particularly believe in superstitions and anything that wasn't backed by cold, hard logic. But he saw no point in alienating her about that now. It was how she made a living, and he could respect that.
"Stuff and nonsense, Maddie," he said, firm but gently. "I stand by what I said. You're welcome here whenever you need."

Adira thought about his words for a moment, before deciding on an answer.
"I think I'd like to stick to Allen," she said. "But only if you just call me Adira. No 'Miss' or anything."
His statement about being raised by parents who lived in the past intrigued her. Were they the old-fashioned kind? Were they even still around? She found herself growing curious about him, little by little.

After sharing a glance with her friends, and earning excited nods from them, Adira grinned, a cheerfulness coming back into her voice.
"Sure! We'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Mr Allen!"
Lillian scoffed. "Why do you call him that? I keep telling you, it's weird, he's about our age," she said.
"I'm going to be working for him," Adira argued, and then turned to Allen. "I don't know, I'll leave it up to you. How should I address you?"

Raisa went into the kitchen, and Ezra took the opportunity to talk to Maddie, without Raisa hearing.
"You know, you're welcome to come back and visit anytime," he said, trying to let her know he was being sincere. "You know where I live now, and even Raisa likes you, so you have a place here if you ever need it. And since you mentioned your house earlier, I could help you find another place. You shouldn't have to survive on the streets like that."
