@eruca: Donna was probably the third most painful departure for me. Hers was number two, but Clara's in Face The Raven hit me harder than Donna's. And I'm not sure if it's as much as her death (since she technically came back) but rather the reason WHY (ie she thought Rigsy was going to die, so she decided to take his place) and when she told Twelve, "never be a warrior, always a doctor.) The next part is for you as well.

@Saeyra: Again, this if for both of you. I am pretty excited for the female Doctor actually. I haven't seen any of Jodie's work, but I'm willing to actually SEE her in action before making any judgements as to whether or not I like her as The Doctor. That's what so many people don't seem to get. It's not her gender that's going to determine whether or not she's good as The Doctor, it's about her acting skills and if she can pull the role off well. As long as she still has the quirkiness that The Doctor is supposed to have, I'll be pretty good. I'm just disappointed she's not ginger. (JK)

@saeyra: That is a very good point, and I can kind of see where you're going with it. Maybe that's actually another reason I don't care for her is because she's just like a female version of The Doctor. They're too similar. I respect your opinion and definitely wouldn't try to change it. :) I just haven't been much a River fan from day one. And I really don't know why.

@tuijp: You can give me the titles if you want to, but I probably won't watch them to be honest as it is. So it's up to you.

@eruca: Sorry for the delay, I've just got back on. But for me, the saddest companion departure will always be Rose. Not just because she was by far my favorite companion but because of her relationship with The Doctor and how much they truly cared for each other/were in love. It was utterly heartbreaking and I was sobbing by the end of Doomsday and The End of Time. Plus, I found Rose to be the most relatable out of all of the companions. What departure was saddest for you?

Oh wow. Really? I think Tolkien being racist/fascist is possibly one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. I've even heard people accuse him of being sexist because of the lack of female characters, which is complete hogwash as well. Though he had many more male characters than female characters, all of his female characters were strong, independent, and actually served a purpose. But exactly, it's not like he was trying to write a factual record of history.

@saeyra: Hey, I'm jumping in on the Doctor Who convo too. So I wanted to be sure to ping you so you'd see it.

It seems we all sort of have different opinions about River. In my case, I never really liked River much at all to be honest. I mean she was fun, and brilliant, and a cool woman, but I feel they tried too hard to make her "special." It wasn't enough to have her be The Doctor's wife and the fact they keep meeting in the wrong order, but they also had to make her Amy and Rory's daughter, who was stolen from them. And even then THAT wasn't as far enough in proving her level of "specialness," they had to drag it even further. I mean while on Doctor Who anything is possible, they just took it too far I feel. She felt more like a Mary Sue to me than well rounded and realistic/relatable companion. Plus, while I feel that The Doctor definitely loved River, I don't feel he was truly IN LOVE with her despite the fact that she was his wife. And that made their storylines less compelling and quite a bit less emotional to me than they could have been. They were still sad of course, but I didn't find myself crying nearly as much as I did with most other things.

@tuijp: Thank you for the tip. I will definitely take your advice.

@eruca: Exactly. I think that's part of the reason I've clung to Doctor Who so much. Like, there are a lot of deaths but they tend to be on the quick, clean side. And they're more emotional than anything. Even the orc deaths in LotR aren't too bad. At least compared to other things. Like there are a lot worse shows/movies out there.

I haven't read the essay but I think I have heard that somewhere before as well.
