It sounds like it might be some kind of addiction but idk if that makes it too dark
so perhaps a person?
some kind of forbidden/unusual/unpractical love?
Like they tried to stop/quit but it keeps coming back?

Tbh I thought of a vampires as well? Since they're so charismatic

We often think they're bigger than they actually are
The second part is either that they're scary or that you're fighting against it
the last part is either the monster want to be let out because you A: can't hold them or B: because you're ready to fight it?
