"And it was great." he said.

"But look at it THIS way... I have less to lose, here." he told her.

"I'm a new acquaintance. If I do this, and she doesn't want my company any longer, so be it." he said further. "It will suck, losing out on a potential future with her, whatever it might hold, but I was brought in to protect her." he continued.

"And protect her, I SHALL." he declared.

"I refuse to let such a talent, and such innocence, be corrupted any longer."

Kalin just laughed.

"Well, you might as well tell her." She commented before motioning to the door across the room.

"as it looks liek Rene's finished tending to her." She added. When eh turned to look, he saw Desiree step into the room with Rene. She still looked a bit pale, and as if she hurt, but she didn't look horrible, at least.

"......" Jaden was silent as he saw Desiree.

"I..." he stammered.

"Wait, just outright TELL her this???" he asked Kalin, but she didn't have time to answer before Desiree got close enough to talk to.

"Ah, hey." Jaden greeted her.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"You look surprisingly all right, considering what just happened." he commented.

Kalin looked to Desiree before motioning to her own ears as she noticed that the magician didn't have her headset on. Desiree just shook her head and pulled some hair back to show one of her ears, and what looked to be earbuds she was wearing.

"Ahhh, that makes sense. Headset bite the dust?" Kalin asked. Desiree just nodded before looking to Jaden.

"Rene's a miracle worker." Was Desiree's answer.

"I... ah..." he stammered.

"Right." he said.

"Yes. It really seems so." he agreed.

"But... headset?" he asked.

"I mean, I know you're always wearing a set of them... are they expensive?" he asked her.

"I can get you a new pair." he offered.

"Top-of-the-line."

"They're custom made." Desiree commented.

"But no worries. Already contacted the one who does them for me." She added with a smile.

"Sorry about ... well... how it all ended." She said as she took a seat at the bar. Kalin just grabbed her a bottle of water and passed it to the magician.

"I ... never expected it all to happen, either." She added with a light sigh.

Jaden was silent, and bit his lip slightly.

"It's okay." he said.

"We both escaped with... well, myself with minimal damage, and you certainly could have fared worse." he continued.

"And the crowd had a good time." he went on.

"......" he was then silent, before sighing heavily.

"...look..." he said.

"I'll make sure this doesn't happen again." he told her.

Desiree was silent before taking a drink.

". . . . . . No." She stated bluntly.

"Don't. I refuse to have someone else stoop to their levels." She added before looking to Jaden straight.

". . . They're mana hunters, one via acquisition, one via genetics." She then continued. "And yes, they can deal with one such as yourself far more effectively than I think you realise."

Jaden paused for a moment, seemingly VERY confused.

"Wait..." he said.

Rene just rolled his eyes and gave a look to Kalin, as if to silently say 'here it comes...'

"Right, mana hunters." Jaden said.

"But... aren't they... family?" he asked her. "How would you be...?" he started to ask further, but shook his head.

"Hold on, 'one such as myself'?" he then asked her.

"Woah, woah, woah, SO many questions are in my head right now." he told her.

"Yep, that figures." Rene commented offhandedly.

"I'm a mystery." was all Desiree said, a slight sigh to her voice.

"Where are you staying?" Kalin asked, her voice curious, concerned. Desiree looked over to her before shaking her head lightly.

"I ... have no idea. I can't go home." Was her answer.

"Jaden'll take you to his place. He lives in a suite and definitely has the room." Kalin said, offering Jaden's place without anything from him.

"Unless you want to come home with Rene and I." She added. Desiree paled before shaking her head.

"What!? No! You two are too important to the city. I refuse to put you in any potential danger because of me!" Desiree exclaimed, not even touching on the offer of Jaden's place.

There was a bit of an underlying allusion to Desiree's last response, but Jaden ignored it, figuring it was unintentional. Or he could have been looking too deeply into it. Or he was still confused.

Regardless, he shook his head and cleared his throat.

"She has a point." he said to Desiree.

"You and I barely know each other." he told her.

"And for all intents and purposes, considering the attitudes we put forth to the public, one would think we'd be oil and water." he went on.

"So staying with me really would be the perfect hiding place."

Desiree was completely silent for a few seconds before just shaking her head lightly.

"I.... I really can't argue that." She agreed.

"Cool. So you'll head home with Jaden while Rene and I find you a new apartment. Sound good?" She asked, the question there for everyone there.

"Not a chance." Kalin commented with a light laugh.

"All right then." Was all the magician said. There was something to her voice though. She wasn't keen on this, but wasn't going to fight it either because she couldn't deny the truth to the benefits.

"Not ... planning to grab that much." She then said.

"Just some clothes."

"You really want to risk them having found your home already just for some clothes?" Kalin asked.

"We're about the same size, I can give you some clothing if you can't afford some new clothes for the moment." She added. Desiree was silent, debating that.

Kalin just checked her phone, the clock specifically, before chuckling.

"Come on. It's only nine. I know of a couple of clothing shops open for another hour." She said.

"Kalin..." Desiree started, but was cut off.

"Rene, if you'd be so kind as to lock this place up and whatnot for me?" Kalin asked, not even touching on Desiree for the moment.

"Jaden, I don't know how well she'd agree with your portals fo the moment, they're kinda volatile for a first timer. Head home if you want and I can drop her off once done." She added
