There was silence for a moment, before the grip on her heart tightened.

And she then saw the air in front of her swirl and shift, before someone in a cloak formed.

"You do not know your place." they said.

"No-one is above me." they told her.

"All succumb to me." they said further.

"All die."

She couldn't deny the sheer relief that she felt when that grip was gone. That was terrifying, but she'd managed to keep herself calm on the surface. Granted, she was internally panicking like no tomorrow.

"So?" She asked as she stepped up to him, her panic barely visible as what her uncle practically beat into her skull took hold. He'd made sure that she would always stare danger in the face and not back down. It was one way for her to deal with the panic, the paranoia, that cropped up from time to time.

"What of it? What difference does it make? As you've seen, I may not have an explosive revival like... someone... but I don't stay down."

"What can you do to me if you can't kill me?" She asked. "Just say it outright."

"What are you?"

"........" the cloaked figure was silent for a moment.

"Are you that dumb?" he asked.

"Or do you not listen?" he asked her.

"I just DID tell you WHAT... and WHO... I am." he told her.

He then plunged his hand through her chest.

"I. Am. Death." he said, before she collapsed yet again.

She didn't say anything after getting to her feet again, before just smirking.

"No. You did not actually outright say it. That's why I said, say it outright." She told him.

"I figured, but confirmation is always good. For one such as myself, jumping to conclusions is a horrible thing." She paused a moment before stepping back and bowing cordially.

"Samantha Fyrane, here for your murdering pleasure." She just laughed as she straightened.

"And yes. My father is the phoenix you seem to have issues with. Didn't get the firey revival though." She muttered the last bit.

"Now. What do you want with me? I'm sure you've learned I don't stay dead."

"Heh... heh, heh, heh..." Jack chuckled.

"See... what you give me is a rare opportunity." he told her.

"I can think of SO many ways to kill a person." he said. "But there's so little people." he continued.

"But YOU... YOU, I can kill over and over again." he went on.

"I can see what different things do. How they kill. How much pain can be caused before you actually DO die..." he continued, sounding more and more... disconcertingly excited.

"You are a perfect plaything."

Samantha just let out a long breath.

"Something... tells me that I am in a lot more trouble than I can rightly realise...." She muttered before sighing lightly.

"Sure." She said. All in all, it could be worse... at least this way she could keep her family safe from him for the moment. If he was enteretained by how he could repeatedly kill her, it would keep him from others.

Right?

In theory, it made complete sense to her, and while she didn't want to do this, she knew it was for the best.

"Are we staying here in the forest, or going elsewhere for this?" She asked, her voice curious. A bit apprehensive, but curious.

"How quaint." Jack responded.

He then extended his palm, and her surroundings changed slightly. They still looked the same, but it was in a more greyish tone, and everything seemed to wiggle and move like it was underwater.

"A little pocket dimension." he told her.

"Where the only God you will know is ME." he said.

"Hmmmm." he then mumbled, looking her over.

"Quick, or slow...?" he asked himself.

"And I wonder how that damned phoenix would react to knowing his little offspring is trapped in an endless cycle of death..." he wondered further.

'He'd probably both commend and curse me." Samantha answered. Commend me for being willing to do this, curse me for... well, the exact same thing."[/b] She added.

"But... that's just how it is."

---

She paused a moment before practically collapsing when she realised one large detail.

Almost everyone she'd been trying to save for the past few hours was ... actually surviving. It was something that she hadn't realised, and once she did, she nearly collapsed to her ass in the hall. Instead, she just leaned against the wall and bent at the waist, leaning forward and resting her hands on her knees.

'Holy... shit... what the hell happened?" She asked the air, knowing no one would hear her.

It seemed like there had been a collective sigh of relief from the entire hospital.

However, when she made her way back to her office to rest, she was interrupted by a phone call from Darrell.

"Hey Alice." he said when she answered.

"Question." he went on.

"Is Samantha there?" he asked her. "She... she's been gone for a bit now."

Alice was silent for a moment.

"Sammy?" she asked as she went to her computer and started to look through her files.

"Not... that I am seeing through the recent admittances." She adnswered.

"How long is 'a bit now'?" She then asked. It could be too early to worry, for all she knew.

"Well, she told me she was stressed and going for a run/jog." Darrel responded.

"That was 5 hours ago." he told her.

This was, indeed, concerning, as Sammy's stress jogs only took about 2 hours at most.

"And she's not answering her phone at all. In fact, whenever I try to call, I get an automated message saying that her phone is unavailable to reach." he went on.

"So I'm starting to get a little worried."

". . . battery is likely dead." Alice commented.

"But that's hardly anything good." she paused a moment.

"Have you tried scrying for her?" She then asked. Darrell just sighed.

'That's the thing.... she's apparently in the forest, and Kelly's gone to look for her, but no one can find her out there. Not even if we're in the exact spot that ---" Darrell started to answer, before being interrupted by Alice, who had paled considerably.

"Darrell... shut up." She stated.

"Sammy isn't in the best of shapes. Don't ask how I know, just trust me on this." She paused for a fraction of a second as she grabbed her cell and sent a text to her brother.

"I gotta go. I need to make sure I'm ready for something. Darrell? You should do the same." She said as she hit send.

Over the past while, since that phone call with her brother, while being stuck at the hospital, Alice had been thinking. She'd been thinking long and hard about what it was that was going on, what it could be, what could come of it.

And she was pretty sure she'd just come to realise the truth of the matter.

Bringers was all the text to her brother said, and it said all that was needed. She'd come across the text about them in the past, several times over actually. She'd heard about them from her father as well, a first hand story.

This was far too reminiscent, and she was quite certain that the missing Fyrane... was currently why those at the hospital were surviving again.

The response was quick. And it wasn't in the form of a text or call.

About a minute later, she heard knocking at her door, and Lindsay let himself in.

"We've come to the same conclusion." he said.

"Armageddon. Ragnarok. It's the End." he went on.

"I assume that is what your text meant." he then added, before pausing.

"What made YOU come to this conclusion?" he asked her.

Alice's tired eyes met her brothers determined ones.

"Everything I've read about them." She started, 'Eveything I've read, heard and just taken in about them." She paused a moment before sighing, knowing that he wouldn't like what it was that had truly made it click for her.

"Alice, was there something in specific?" Lindsay asked his sister, who just bit her lip lightly, briefly, before sighing. She knew he wouldn't like it, but she had to tell him.

It was only right, after all. He was Samantha's father.

"For so long, people here weren't surviving. I barely managed to get Adrien to a point where she wasn't dead." She started as she sat down on the loveseat that was still there from when Rene had claimed this office as his own. It only survived due to an enchantment to revert it to how it was when the enchantment was initially placed each night.

"Beyond that though, it was nigh impossible to have anyone survive. I had to stop caring and trying to revive everyone as much as I normally would. I'd give them fifteen minutes after, before calling it." She continued.

"For the past six hours or so.... People are alive. People are surviving. I don't feel like I'm about to drop at random intervals either." She paused here for a moment before sighing.

"I think Death was haunting the hospital, Lindsay."

"Okay.... but what made that actually click for you?" He asked.

"Darrell called.... Sammy's missing."

Lindsay was silent for a moment.

And then it clicked.

It wasn't hard for him to figure out what she was getting at.

And she could tell he was angry. For a brief moment, she swore she could feel a rune emanating from within him... but there wasn't. He couldn't do that.

However, the sheer anger he was feeling right now made it seem like he could produce one.

"....Alice..." he said, his tone quiet and ominous.

"Are you saying that Death has my little girl... and is potentially torturing her and killing her over and over?" he asked her.

When Alice felt what she could have sworn was the rune starting, she instinctively looked down, but saw nothing. She then remembered that Lindsay had no form of that in his mana, at all. No matter what he tried to do, he couldn't do it.

When she met his gaze again, she could see the sheer anger, ire, everything, within it.

'Yes." She answered.

"Lindsay, that is exactly what I'm saying. I'm also saying that it is why people, your neice, are surviving in this hospital now."

Now... things got a bit different.

Lindsay was still angry. She could see how livid he was in his eyes. That hadn't changed.

However, it also seemed like something was at war with the anger. Not to suppress it, but the change who and what it was diverted to.

The ominous aura from him continued to emanate and grow stronger for about 10 seconds, before she noticed it fade, ever so slightly.

And then Lindsay just sighed.

"Meaning, knowing Samantha, she practically volunteered to keep Death's attention, and divert it away from everyone here at the hospital." he said.

"I must admit, I am feeling very... conflicted right now." he told her.

And she knew that was the understatement of the year.

"I'm willing to bet that is understating it." Alice commented.

"But Lindsay, it really is thanks to your daughter that I can save anyone here. I think Death had been having... some fun... at my expense here before." She paused a moment.

"Someone really should go and make sure that Darrell and Evan aren't completely losing it..." She sighed lightly before meeting Lindsay's gaze.

"I doubt that there'd be anything good coming of Evan trying to use his necromancy to find her, again. He'd likely summon death itself... and he doesn't have the tendency to not die like you and Sammy."

All the anger seemed to instantly leave Lindsay at that point, like emotional gears shifting without a clutch.

"Oh lord." he said.

"Evan..." he muttered.

"Alice, I have to go." he told her.

"I need to make sure things don't go to hell." he said.

"We'll talk later." he finished.

With that, he turned and quickly left the office.

Alice hadn't even had a chance to say anything before her brother was gone, and she was alone.

"I really hope you stop him from doing anything stupid..." She said quietly before sighing, heavily at that. This was quite a mess to be in after all.

"Right... I need to do some checks, make sure people aren't dying again." She said quietly before heading off.

---

She was watching him in the garden, fascinated by what she saw. How could one such as he be completely unaware of her presence? It was quite a surprise, but she wasn't going to complain. There was no reason to, after all. Him not picking up on her presence was a notably better suituation.

"Let's see how you react to this." They said quietly, their voice young, feminine, and almost light. They stepped up to where he was and just touched a leaf above him. It was a tall plant that towered over his crouching form.

But it quickly turned grey before crumbling to ash atop him.
