"....." Ryker was silent for a moment, before grabbing a fork that Eke had brought.

"Well... okay then..." he said.

He then used the fork to separate a good-sized bite from the cake, and slowly put it in his mouth.

As soon as he did, his expression changed.

Eke saw become one of surprise, delight, and... more importantly... happiness.

Eke smiled proudly. It made him cry some. He just wanted to make Ryker happy.

He sat on the couch curling up holding his sweater close to him.

"You...you like it?" he wiped his face

"Mmmm." Ryker mumbled, before swallowing the bite he'd taken.

"I do." he said.

"I've not tasted anything like this since... well... ever." he told him.

"The taste is really sweet and nice, and it... it makes me feel... well..." he mumbled, pausing for a moment.

"Good. Like, all over."

He laughed and smiled. He was crying tears of joy. It was all he wanted.

He hugged ryker tightly closing his eyes.

He coughed a few times before his breathing went slow and steady, his arms limp.

Ryker returned the embrace, before he noticed that Eke's arms went limp.

"Eke?" he asked.

"Hey. Hey, you ok?" he asked.

"What happened?" he asked further.

He really hoped this was just Eke being tired and weak from the cold... and not something far more serious.

Eke curled up and muttered nonsense.

His cheeks were still quite red, but it would appear eke was just asleep.

His tail however, curled around Rykers calf, as if to say "I trust you".

"............................." Ryker was stunned silent for a moment, a lump forming in his throat.

He swallowed it hard, before slowly make his way to a couch, sitting in it and leaning against it so he would he comfortable, but still allow Eke to use him like a large pillow.

He smiled a little, and then relaxed.

'Heh.' he chuckled internally.

'I could get used to this.' he thought.

Eke was peaceful, and even smiling some.

He slept for a few hours before sitting up yawning.

He felt better, looked better. He smiled and stretched

Ryker was in a weird hazy state of being half-awake and half-asleep, but he stirred when Eke woke up and stretched.

"Hey again." he said to him.

"How ya feeling?" he asked.

"I mean, well, aside from the cold." he clarified.

"That's gotta suck, but how are you, not taking that into consideration? A lot better from... well, before?" he asked further.

"Better from almost drowning yeah" he smiled.

"We should get going" He got up unravelling his tail and stretched it.

"No more rivers...or lakes...or oceans...or just...water" He looked down and began fidgeting.

Ryker just sighed.

"I can't promise that." he told him.

"I might need to fish for food if it comes to it." he said.

"But don't worry, I got us another tent to keep us warm, as well as some sleeping bags." he went on.

"We'll be fine, I promise." he assured Eke.

He nodded. "Lets just..." he trailed off for a moment.

"Lets just...stay away from drownable bodies of water" he stretched once more grabbing his bag.

"We should get going"

"That's fair enough." Ryker responded with a sigh.

"And yeah." he muttered.

"You boys leaving?" one of the elder men that was sitting nearby asked.

"Sadly." Ryker replied. "We know we're welcome here, but if we stay much longer, we'll bring unwanted attention, and you're all too nice to suffer that." he reasoned.

"So, we best be moving along. Home is wherever we end up next."

Eke held rykers hand as they walked.

"So where to now? what direcction? Anywhere but um...north" he smiled but he loooked away.

He had waved goodbye to the nice older men. He was quiet for a very long time.

"Well, let's go South, then." Ryker suggested.

"We just came from... around the Northeast, so... yeah, we'll head South." he said.

"Not sure how much further until the next town, but we're prepared to sleep outside now." he told him.

"You know, tent and sleeping bags and such." he added.

Normally he didn't care about such things... or even really himself, for that matter... but he found himself suddenly wanting to at least make it seem like he was trying to survive.

And it was mostly because of Eke.

"You feeling any better?" he then asked.

"Home was to the north..." he finally said.

"Ryker...are you glad you dont have family?" he asked suddenly.

Ryker paused when the question came out of nowhere.

"Ah..." he stammered.

"....hm." he mumbled.

"That's... that's a very good question." he said.

"When I was a slave, I used to lament not having a family." he told him. "When I received my 'curse', I was glad I didn't have one, as no-one should be burdened with me." he continued.

"Now? I'm not sure." he admitted.

"I can't help but wonder how my life would have turned out if I DID have a family." he went on.

"On one hand, I am. On the other hand, I regret it deeply."

"i dont mean you! your like...the family i should have had!! not...i mean...i...i was talking about...her..." he felt like an idiot and just looked to the ground.

Eke suddenly felt Ryker hand rest gently on his shoulder.

"I knew what you were talking about." he assured him.

"Family is a very vague term, but I knew you were referring to what is typically considered a family." he said further.

"And I understand." he went on, before pausing.

"...and you mean that?" he asked. "That 'family you should have had' comment about me?" he inquired.

"That's how you see me? As... well... positive family?"

He nodded happily.

"Yeah!" he grinned. "Your like the favorite big brother!"

He hugged ryker tight. "Youve kept me safe when things attacked us. You dove into freezing waters to save my life. You enjoyed my cake! You...you helped me get better clothes...you fed me steak!!"

He stopped walking and looked at ryker. "Why wouldnt i see you as positive?"
