@vitreus: Waaaaaay back before the funeral industry took things over, it was common for families to take care of their dead in the home for a few days. Prepping it for the ground and saying their last goodbyes, with like a party and shit.

what you think it is.

seb says "i think coco was really good actually - i was worried it was just a movie trying to make money off of the book of life, but after watching it, i realized it wasn't! i think it's an accurate portrayal of dia de muertos!!"

@vitreus: The funeral industry took something that happens everyday, and will happen to all of us. And made it taboo. I highly recommend watching a Youtube channel called Ask A Mortician. She can explain some of this much better than I can.

Well for one thing they took the family out of the process. Prepping the body behind closed doors, and making it sound like the dead body is dangerous to you. It's not.

oh i see ... is it bc funeral homes can profit from that process ..?
or so that it seems more like ... a formal process?

I was watching a true crime show a while back, and the profiler decided that if you show any interest in death for any reason. Then you are likely a sociopath. Instead of someone who respects the great equalizer.

@Another Movie Addict: i think seb watches her videos!!! id have 2 ask him tho to know for sure

@xvz: death is seen as taboo bc of the funeral industry making it seem like... rly weird to talk about?? like, forbidden... but its a rly white way of seeing it honestly !! seb says mexicans like himself see death as an ordinary thing, bc its not ingrained in their cultures 2 not talk about it! in fact, dia de muertos seems 2 be honoring + remembering the dead instead of avoiding the thought !! im sure he cld explain it better hehe

dia de muertos seems like a good way to think about and honor those who have died :0

i think in my culture something you do is burn clothes/paper money so they can use it in the afterlife

@vitreus: Eh the Irish had some very good rituals for the dead, only 100ish years or so. Which in the grand scheme is not that long ago. But people started seeing profit in taking away those rituals.
@xvz: I was born to a family of old people. My father was 25 years older than my mother, so I grew up going to a lot of funerals.
