@xvz: I get most of my penpals through instagram because there’s a whole penpal community on there. I just have my profile set to say ‘open to new penpals’ and I get people reaching out about it.

I actually followed the calligraphy community onto instagram to begin with since I was already into that, from a really small calligraphy forum I’d found from google. And once I was there the instagram algorithm is usually pretty quick to pick up on what kind of things you like and it wasn’t long before I found the penpal community.
tbf I have a small small handful of penpals that were pre-instagram that I picked up here and there. One of them was actually from another avatar site I was on, a few were from random penpal sites I had tried over the years.

I probably have something like 20-30 penpals total. Only about 5-10 are active enough that I mail them once a month. But that still comes out to me having at least one letter a week usually to respond to.
I don’t really talk to any of them outside of the letters currently. Two of my previous penpals that I now largely keep up with in other ways I used to also talk to them online on a fairly regular basis but they’ve both stopped writing for different reasons. I have one penpal now I chat with a little on instagram because I follow her account but not in any significant amount. For all of them though I have an online point of contact of some kind in case the letters get lost.
