Forums Serious Talk How not to run an avatar game based around buying and selling

Donator — he/him Posted 3 years ago ( 2021/09/22 00:57:30 )

So first of all, I'm sorry about my language, I'm just very very annoyed at this game and it's community.
Also, I'm sorry if it doesn't make sense, I'm not good with words.
I also didn't proof read this so I probably forgot to explain something but oh well.

I wouldn't usually talk shit about a game on a site based around essentially the same thing but GOD this game has really pissed me off.
I'm not gonna name it of course, but if you play it you'll probably recognise it.

Anyway, so the game initially launched in 2014ish with a focus on socialising, then it rebranded in 2015 and added a gacha. At first it was fine, I joined in 2016 and the most expensive item, a pair of black bunny ears, must've been about 40k at that time? (Now, they're around 300k, and they're not even the most expensive anymore).

Now, I have MANY issues with how expensive things get on this god forsaken game, but I'll get into that soon.
First I want to talk about the 'social aspect'.

So, the game revolves around buying and selling items won from events and gacha. There is little to no social aspec anymore. In 2016 they added a newsfeed, basically a way to post pictures and stuff, and at first it had an explore tab. They got rid of that around 2020ish because of MANY issues with grooming, bulling, etc, and at first when I came back from a hiatus and noticed it was gone I was sad, but after finding out why and seeing what happened literally this past event, I'm glad they got rid of it.
The community is greedy, toxic, and all around makes the game hard to play. An event ended today, and when I say I never want to event on that game again I MEAN it this time.

So, the event was a recolour event, and basically people entered a contest where they recoloured some past items made by the games designers, and if they won they would be made into items for two gachas and prizes in the event. Well, it sounds great at first, sure, but it was very much a huge mistake because what ended up happening was two events decided to make a 'justice for top 2 crews' hashtag, which makes sense because the game has millions of players but the top crew, usually 50 members, means 50 of the legendary item. Not to mention that the individual item has a top 15 meaning that the legendary item only has 15 made. This obviously makes the items very expensive, and for example a rifle was recoloured gold, and now it's fucking 500k.
Anyway, the two crews kind of fueded, which was bad enough, but after asking for support from everyone, they started calling people who didn't get as many tickets 'broke ass bitches' and stuff. Lovely. Plus, the crew in 2nd place upped their 'minimum ticket requirement' mid event and one member didn't hit that minimum, which was upped from 1 billion to 2 billion (for reference, I pulled in the grab and still only got like 20mil tickets), the member got 1bil tickets and yet was called broke and got bullied by crew members.
It caused a whole hashtag to be created and while the member did NOT tell the crew owner that she couldn't hit the new minimum until 24 hours before the event ended, raising the minimum mid event and and bullying members for not hitting it is gross.
1 billion tickets is hard as fuck to reach WITHOUT spending like, 300k gold on the event, which is hard to make because the more expensive items are almost always hard to get in the first place.

Now, obviously game currency is different in each game, and like, here, $30 gets you 3k ohms, right?
Well, in the game I'm talking about, $100 gets you 25k gold. There's a pack on the games website for $1k, and it gets you 300k.
People are spending $1k on virtual items in a game.
Regularly.

And people call others broke if they dont.

I don't care what people spend their money on. I've spent money on fucking PNG's of Belphie in Obey Me! before. I buy physical merch. I've bought fucking ohms before. (Granted, spending money on here is donating to the website, so it's going somewhere good.)

But people are making crews with the purpose of getting 1 billion tickets on events, something that you can only do if you spend 1000 real fucking dollars.
The community is fucking terrible and they're making it basically impossible to get items unless you are constantly selling items and spinning the gachas and eventing.

It's no longer a social game, it's an extortionate game of buy and sell and only the best survive. I now remember why I went on hiatus in the first place.

Omg I play this game too. I’ve since taken a hiatus, I’m sad to see it’s only gotten worse since I left. Everything you just described was the reasons for me leaving in the past. This makes me never want to return. That site was a pain in my ass lol.

It's a game more marketed towards younger teens, or at least I feel like that's the majority of their players.
Part of the reason why I love Voltra so much is everyone's a bit older and mature. There's a mutual respect between players... and even between the players and the staff. And Voltra isn't set up for "instant gratification", you actually have to put in effort to make friends and collect items.
Idk.... I'm just really sorry that game turned out the way it did. Oversaturated too quickly. Rip..

mini correction: the game DOES have a website, but it's a mobile game
the website is mainly just for the item catalogue bc you can't make posts on there, i think you can edit your avatar on there?? but it's kind of broken so it's more just an item list than anything

@icedchai: YEAH its just gotten worse honestly, i should've seen it coming when they got rid of san fran and fishing tbh... that was a sign
and yeah part of the reason i still like it here is the fact that it's been a few years and the social aspect is still one of the most important things, and people don't view players with more items as more important

and like, all the alternative style items are like 20k on there now which sucks for an emo kid but oh well at least voltra has cool horns AKJSHJDH

@Stinky: oh trust me they definitely do, they make a post whenever an event ends and for this one they said 'team work makes the dream work' or something like that although what happened was DEFINITELY not something to be proud of
and now there's a new event but the legendary item is still top 15...

@Alethna: honestly if i listed every issue they had the post would be like 10 pages long AKSHJDHG
i should've stayed on hiatus to be very honest, like, they announced the results of a halloween design contest and half the comments were people shitting on the winners designs :/

@sunny: AKJHJH i feel like it would get me in trouble help

is it against the rules to name the game???? because i'd gladly name it if it means people can stay away from that god foresaken app AKJSHJD

@sunny: akjhdjh ill put it in a spoiler just in case bc anxiety

it's called highrise virtual world, it's available on ios and android and it markets itself as a social game but it's SO NOT WORTH IT AKSJHJDH

@squishy sloth: I mildly remembered when I used to play this game for the first time and I was pretty curious about said game back then because I wanted to find a substitute for other mobile avatar games. Unfortunately it didn't last long as I realised the price of each clothing are too expensive for my liking and how boring it is so I ended up quitting the game and not bothering to come back. @Hydrangea: honestly i don't blame you for quitting, it's really not worth playing anymore
it's just very... not fun at all akjskdjh
like, it used to be worth logging in every day, there was a daily log in and daily goals but for some reason they got rid of the daily log in???? there are still daily goals but it's more just 'have 3 crew mates visit you in your room' so if you don't have a crew you're screwed rip
i guess it's their attempt of keeping it social?

@squishy sloth: Yeah, it didn't feel social-ish and why would they got rid of the daily log in is beyond me as not everyone wants to spend lots of money on a game that's not worth it. The daily goals on the other hand..... some of their goals are pretty unrealistic though and yep, it could be them trying to keeping the game alive when most players have already quit.

There are other mobile avatar games such as L*ne Pl*y, A*at*rk*n and others might or might not be better as H*gh R*se but who knows. ^^;

@Hydrangea: yeah it really sucks that it's gotten this bad, i honestly imagine it's because of them getting rid of things that the players actually LIKE (aka why the hell did they get rid of san fran and fishing???? we all liked those wtf)
i remember being super into avatar based games when i found it and yeah, there are others that are WAAAY better akjshjd
i kinda wish i stuck to the other games... would've been nice rip

@squishy sloth: Same. It's like avatar based games nowadays aren't as fun as they used to be in early-mid 2010s. :x There's S*cond L*fe and I*MU but I don't like how they turned out to be less social (I thought they would be more social but turns out I was wrong) compared to when it was relatively new back then.

And yeah, I understand. The only avatar based games (well, sites) are this, G*ia and possibly few of them, I also used to play o*rW*rld (it's another avatar based game but it runs in Flash and has loads of stuff to do, at least in late 2000s-early 2010s) back then when I was a teen but said game/site also went downhill (and probably dying) due to similar reasons you've mentioned on your first post.

I played that game for a few hours and then deleted my game. I was bored so fast and everything was way too expensive and hard to get. And then I felt super uncomfortable being around 10-15 year olds. It was very awkward.

SO i have been informed that since i'm not promoting the game i can say the name, so from now on i won't be censoring it:
it's called 'highrise virtual world', and it's on android and ios. for your own sanity, stay away from it, it's NOT worth spending hours trying to get gold only to realise the price of the item you want has gone up again

anyway onto replies aksjhdjdhf

@Hydrangea: i never played second life (i tried but couldn't get into it bc no one talked to me LMAO) but i did play imvu for a long time, i still log in every now and then but honestly it feels like a chore to get literally anyone to talk to you anymore ):
when did social games become antisocial??? it's so weird,, i played ourworld too but again, it was hard to get anyone to talk to you akshjd
it feels like all those games mentioned require you to look 'cool' to even make friends and that just sucks,, which is why i can't recommend them to anyone bc none of them really work as social games or avatar sites anymore akjshjd
also i thankfully avoided gaia bc god i've heard things about it and wow...

@ArsenicAttitude: i second that aksjhdj
i made a couple posts about recent issues with the game and someone liked the posts, i looked at their profile and they genuinely looked about 9
the kicker: they updated the TOS to make the game 17+, but of course they're not doing anything about the kids on the app apart from i guess making it so you can't swear anymore???? which is what it was like in the first place but alright????

also i contacted support about being unable to pawn account bound items like, 3 weeks ago, and they released an update about 2 days ago that fixed anything BUT the pawning issue
pawning items is currently the only way to get bubbles apart from the fortune wheel and the daily bubble thing, especially since they got rid of liking avatars which was a consistent source of bubbles

as you can tell i could not ever recommend the hell game alkjhdjjdhg

@squishy sloth: I see and same. It's like no one wants to greet a newcomer or anyone these days since I feel like everyone wants to talk with people within their group/clique. And if you try to interact with them, you'll get ignored or being bullied just because the way your avatar looks. ( ._ . )

I know right? Social games didn't even feel social nowadays and I definately agree with what you said about those games requiring you to look 'cool' to make new friends. Lmao so true, might as well go for MMOs or FPS/MOBA/battle royale games at this point. *shrugs*

Oh Gaia... It's pretty sad how it turned out to be.... well something, compared to the 2000s Gaia. :x

@Hydrangea: yeah, it's sad how all those games have just turned into 'make your avatar look cool or no one will talk to you' games, i don't know what second life used to be like but i assume it was actually social at one point KAJHSJDDH
i really like single player games though because anxiety so imvu can be fun to an extent at least :3 still feels kinda pointless to play though rip

also what even happened to gaia for it to become that??
now i'm wondering if there's a gaia history video...

UPDATE turns out there IS a 'rise and fall of gaia' video omg

@squishy sloth: I definately agree with you. *nods* The old school Second Life is probably more social than the new SL though it does have some users who are into... uhh adult stuff. >_>; And yep, at least single player games give you relief and you can play at anytime while not worrying about 'catching up'. I like IMVU.. well used to. If only the items weren't so costly and their VIP should've been better, and the Guest_ name can be annoying for some people and yeah, it does feels quite pointless to play since almost every chatroom is either empty or you feel like an outsider to most users. :x

Probably it has to do with inflation on those Gaia gold coins and stuff. Not sure if there is one about Gaia's history though or maybe I'm quite dense.

@Hydrangea: honestly when i tried second life it kind of felt like i was trying to play a single player game without a tutorial bc i had literally no idea what i was doing and no one was talking AKSJHJD
imvu could've done better, i just logged in and basically nothing has changed since the last time
also, they still prioritise imvu next which NO ONE wanted, so another example of companies doing whatever the fuck they want akjhdjd
i actually bought my name to get rid of the guest_ and like, back then it was so important but now i'm like 'why did i bother' akjhsjdh

the video actually does a good job of explaining what the hell happened and like, the ceo change and stuff, but there sadly aren't any videos that go super in depth from what i could find ):

@squishy sloth: I felt the same when I first played Second Life though it didn't last long due to the tutorial isn't very clear and the UI is somewhat outdated and confusing ahaha... ^^; Yeah, I doubt anyone is interested meeting a new player/user since either the long time old users have quitted the game or some tend to go AFK whenever they log in.

True, it had so much potential to be better than SL but as you said, the company made IMVU decided to come up with stuff (e.g: those V coins thing, IMVU Next and so on) that no one asked for. I see, yep it's kinda pointless that no one is going to bother about Guest_ since almost everyone is focused on how your avatar looks.

Ohh I see! That's okay, I don't mind. ^^

@Hydrangea: i actually still have no idea how to play second life JAHSDJHF
imvu is easier but like, there's still not really much to do

also what the hell are v coins even for??? i never saw an explanation for those, they just kind of appeared??
i do think names look better without the guest_ part, but it sucks that you have to buy it instead of like, completing a tutorial that removes the guest part or something, i feel like that would be better than having to buy your name to remove it
