Closed stools didn't have water in them or a drain. They were just a bowl you peed or pooped in. Then a poor servant would clean it.

Oh no, don't sit on the kitty cat.
There's a story of a french king, I believe Louise the Sixteenth, sitting down on a closed stool (toilet) where a cat was snoozing. The cat scratched the shit out of his ass.

I'm babysitting Tiny, 'cause my uncle had to go to a doctor's appointment. She's very hard to type around. Sweety is staying in my lap right now.
