I personally enjoyed the hot potato game. While I do agree that it can be confusing, especially for people that weren't aware of the game from the start and were pinged into it, and it's not like the frustration isn't understandable, I feel like people should remember that it's a game. It's not a big deal. I personally was getting frustrated when pings weren't as fast, but I forced myself to take a step back and remind myself of that fact. And it's not like there wasn't a fail safe action(? not sure if I'm describing it properly, sorry), which only ended up being used once, if I remember correctly.
Basically, regarding the rules, it was thought out well. I would love to play it again.
