About a week ago, after having it in my queue for a very long time, I put on Aniara as my boyfriend had already fallen asleep and I'd kind of been waiting to watch it by myself (I had a feeling it wouldn't vibe with him and I was probably right idk).
It's a Swedish sci-fi flick from 2018 that's technically a remake of a mid-century film, and both films were based upon a poem written in 1956 by Harry Martinson.
I wasn't really sure what to expect; the cover art was eye-catching, but the Netflix description was pretty vague, and I didn't want to look it up online at risk of reading too much.
But I was definitely not expecting what I saw, and this film has been on my brain ever since, which hasn't really happened since I first watched The Life of Pi.
Most sci-fi seems to focus on the gadgets, the tech, the unknowns and wonders of space and distant worlds; which is neither surprising nor necessarily bad.
But Aniara has such a potent human element that all the usual "sci-fi" stuff feels almost understated, like secondary elements. In the grand scheme of the story it makes sense; the focus is on humanity, our idiosynchrasies, and our place in the universe.
Have you seen it? Or have you read the poem? Is it sitting in your queue? Tbh I recommend giving it a go if you're into truly speculative fiction. Fair warning though, there are some...graphic scenes. c': The poem does contain some mature themes too but the language and imagery are...both obvious and not-obvious at the same time. oTL

Finally caved and started watching it the other day, and while I had some inkling of what to expect, I went in mostly blind.
It's fantastic!
I had my suspicions that being eliminated meant being killed, but DAMN
after the first two kids got shot during Red Light Green Light, and everyone started panicking and piling up and getting slaughtered like fish in a barrel, bumping into others and getting them killed...that was a doozy.
I also honestly expected the old man to hit the green button รก la "invest" meme during the Vote, and never expected the cop to actually make it onto the island.
So while it generally follows the patterns one would expect, it throws in some nice twists and turns that keep you guessing how it's going to get back on track.
Even my boyfriend got hooked--to the point of actually wanting to watch it when I got home from work! And he's not usually one for foreign films or shows, especially since I insist on subs and he's not a quick reader...but even if he doesn't realise it, I know it'll help him get better at it ;)

@GoblinsAndTea: That was my precise reaction!
Reading about the way they hunt and eat kinda gave me the heebie-jeebies, especially considering they're technically visible to the naked eye (up to 1cm in length iirc) so it's harder to 'ignore' than, say, bacteria...

Hydrae? Hydrii? Idk.
Well, I guess it was more like two or three days ago at this point. |D
Hydra on Wikipedia
But, I fell down a minor internet rabbithole recently and learned about Hydras (not the Hydra of Lerna for which it's named). And they seem pretty neat! Reading about their tendrils and imagining them up close was a bit unsettling. It's probably for the best that these creatures, and others like it, are so tiny!
Here's to hoping that the public can soon reap some benefits derived from the natural characteristics of these amazing little leggy grills!

@Jolly: Flash cut to spending hours on IMVU back in the day... oh god. All the money spent. :x sorry dad
Are there friend codes in the game? I'd love to give it a try, but probably won't have a chance for a couple more days D:

Honestly you sound like a fun person to hang out with. You've got character! And that's definitely something to be happy about. Imagine being a stick in the mud. c':
I've kinda gotten to the point of "assert dominance" so I'll double down on awkward things to maintain "power" and prevent the other party from using it against me. Kinda like, make fun of yourself first, and then nobody else can make fun of you? Idk. |D
@milkshake: That is honestly hilarious. You probably made that guy's day; so long as you made someone laugh, I consider that a successful social interaction, indirect or otherwise. c:

That looks really cute! The art style is reminiscent of Wind Waker and Okami.
If it's very early access, there's no doubt more features are planned for its future! But if there's not really enough to bring people back, I have to wonder if they might have started their Open Alpha a little too early. :x
Definitely going to have to keep this one on my radar though! So many neat games coming out or going on sale right now. I really want Lost Embers but there's no way my old laptop can handle it xD

I'm the same. It often feels weird, perhaps too formal or personal, to call people their names; especially if I don't know them well. So I typically open conversations just by talking, or with physical cues, and refer to people by nicknames.
It works pretty well tbh since my coworkers know I mean business if I call them by their real name as opposed to a nickname. xD Kind of like when a parent uses your full name.

@Totalanimefan: Went to sleep by 2 last night, so I guess it was just a fluke. c': And my work schedule has finally stabilised so now I can get a steady routine going. |D
@Kory: Tbh I wish I could do that. The one time I successfully pulled an all-nighter and went to work the next day, I was an absolute zombie and kept sneaking into the breakroom to put my head down. Of course by the time I went home I got that second wind and didn't feel like sleeping anymore... >:C
@Count Trashula: Being strictly diurnal is a fairly recent thing in human culture, too. I wish it were still "normal" to be up and about at 3AM without it being a) a party or b) graveyard shift. xD Sounds like you'd be well suited to a big city that never sleeps, though!
@Koah: Yeah he thought it was like 1:30 AM and I just kinda chuckled, knowing full-well that both movies were 2h each. c':
I almost felt cheated, expecting to wake up at like 10AM. But I guess I'm thankful I still got to keep my day and didn't really feel like crap once I started moving around.

@Totalanimefan: Yeah looking back it was kinda fun and dare I say "quirky" since he's usually asleep / going to sleep when I get home, and I'm usually down for the count within an hour or two! But I'm usually up around 6:30/7 so can't play that game any more c':
@StarBoy: Sweet dreams! I love sleeping but also wish I could just skip it every now and then. c': So many things to do, and the only thing slowing me down is fatigue!

So I got home from work last night around midnight and neither the bf nor I felt like going to sleep yet, so we picked a movie on Hulu and grabbed some snacks expecting to fall asleep before it was over.
But we made it through the whole thing so I just absently picked another for some background noise thinking "yeah, I'm gonna get sleepy and just pass right out"
Nope, we finished that one too
Cut to me joking about how "I'm turning this off now cause it's probably like 4 am and we should sleep"
and what do you know,
IT WAS 4 AM and neither of us had slept except for me dozing off for about 45 minutes at one point.
So there's the story all about how we accidentally (almost) pulled an all-nighter. Haven't stayed up that late since I was a teenager |D
Still couldn't sleep past 8 AM smdh

Second what Baby said... I can't believe we're almost halfway through 2018 Q-Q time, y'all need to chill out and slow down dude
Congrats on getting to go see your favourite (or one of them) musician! Concerts are amazing, especially when the performers do special little things from show to show. Alas, the only concert I was super stoked about (for the time being, anyway) just passed a week ago, and I didn't get to go :C but A Perfect Circle just dropped a new album, and I have yet to hear most of it, so there's that. cB
