i'd probably suggest doing a colour sketch along with lineart sketch just to get the colours down before you dive in
takes a bit more time but so worth it

though for the underpaint for this draw i did add some overlay so when i was actually painting i had all my colours set

i drew the star, duplicated that layer and used gaussian blur to get that glow
and then duplicated that blur layer and painted it rainbow and set it to some other layer style i forgot--
