This is exactlyThey were basically trying to cheat death, or something like that. It made the dead seem almost alive to them. There's also a possibility that they ate parts of the mummies they took out. Including baby mummies. As way of absorbing that person's spirit. A lot of this is conjecture with very little concrete evidence.

This is exactlyIn the case of Egyptians it is believed that they first saw natural mummies, and thought that they looked almost alive. Which would spawn into them perfecting it and doing it on purpose.
