At least opossums are generally harmless (as long as you don't threaten them anyway).
Though in my case, the opossum in the house led to my then-stepfather running through the house in his tightie-whities aiming a shotgun at the gas stove the little guy had run behind.
My mom's ex is, uh, not a smart man. (thank god my mom was there to shout some sense into him!)
Another time, another opossum? He shot a hole in his shower. 🤦♂
EDIT: Oh! After one rifle adventure too many, my mom went through and filled the holes in the house with expanding foam! That stuff is relatively cheap, and might be a decent way to at the very least cut down on the critter entrances!
