To me it always felt as if Eragon just dragged on, not that it was particularly dark. Violent at times, but... It's a fantasy novel first and foremost, not horror. Though I have to admit I do remember being frustrated very frequently at Eragon's childish behavior... Might be worth looking into the series again on my end.
No new books recently but I did recall some things I forgot to add to the list initially.
