"A brawl broke out at Angel Hearts Public School." She answered as she removed the wrappings, revealing what looked like black ink tendrils wrapping around Erica's hand and wrist, and climbing up her arm. As Rene's gaze fell on them, he felt... something... welling up within him, but he couldn't actually put his finger on it. At least not at first.

His sheer concern for her was getting to be far higher a level than he'd ever felt for anyone else, and he had no idea why.

The nurse, meanwhile, was completely silent. When he looked to her face, he saw that there was something bothering her, even if he couldn't identify what it was. She was working through whatever it was though.

Rene placed a hand on his chest, and almost collapsed under the weight of his own concern.

'...I...' he thought.

'This... this is...' he thought further, before looking at the nurse.

"I'll take care of her." he said.

"She's my responsibility. She is under my care." he told her.

"It would be completely and utterly neglectful of me to NOT tend to her wounds." he reasoned.

"Go and help the other patients."

The nurse nodded before leaving. She didn't say anything, didn't have anything she could say here for the moment.

Once she was gone, the concern Rene was feeling seemed to be heavier, weightier.

He then started to look Erica over completely. He knew there was plenty for himm to check, since there was plenty to do. She looked to be a bit of a mess.

"....oh, Erica..." he said quietly.

"What did they do to you?" he asked rhetorically.

He then shook his head, and started to check her over.

What he found was to be expected, really. She had bruises all over, scratches, scrapes, some cuts... she was a mess.

But Rene couldn't help but feel immense shame and guilt in seeing her like this.

"...my fault..." he said.

"This is all my fault." he mumbled, as he started to clean her wounds, and tend to them.

After he'd finished with Erica, he went to check on the others. In the process, he came across one of the staff from the school.

Being the praciing medical personelle, he inquired with the staff to see what was going to happen. That resulted in something that he didn't want to hear.

All of those involved were to be expelled, due to the sheer degree of it all. That had been a serious brawl, and one that had put several minors into the hospital, and even one of the teachers.

Rene gritted his teeth behind his lips, and growled.

'Expelled...' he thought.

'No... no, I can't let that happen!' he declared internally.

'She doesn't deserve to be expelled! She deserves an... education...' he thought further, before starting to come to some sort of realization.

'...an education... but was that the ideal school...?' he wondered, as Erica's arm came back to his mind, and things started swirling and churning away in there.

"And we cannot contact her parents." The staff continued, sounding slightly annoyed with that detail. Rene could tell that the annoyance was born more from concern for the girl, than anything.

"I have to try and track them down. Please, keep the school aware of anythign that comes up regarding these children." After Rene agreed, she'd left.

Rene watched her leave, before starting to think harder.

"Hmmm." he mumbled.

"...she wouldn't do well in the system..." he said, referring to foster care.

"Maybe I can call in some favours from some lawyer friends..." he went on.

"See to it that I can take her in... permanently." he finished.

He knew that Erica was... different. It was clear to him now that those wraps were concealing something of great power. And she needed to learn how to control it.

So, with that knowledge, and new resolve, he made his way back to his office to make a series of calls.

Of the five kids that had been admitted, one had been discharged that night, three had been staying for a couple days, before being discharged, and then there was Erica. She had woken, but wasn't talking to anyone, and the legal system wasn't allowing her to be discharged without somewhere to go. Some legal guardian.

She knew she could to Rene's, but legally speaking, he'd be in nothing but shit if she said anything about that. So she ignored everyone, and that included Rene. So as to try and keep him from getting into any trouble.

Along with that, she'd taken to wrapping her arm again herself, even though the medic s there continued to insist she didn't, for it made it that her skin couldn't breathe, and was resulting in some wounds because of it.

Rene sighed as he walked down the hallway.

He needed to speak with Erica.

But it seemed she was shoving everyone away, and taken to wrapping her arm, which, in the long run, would prove to be extremely dangerous for her.

He made his way to her room, and knocked on the door.

"Erica?" he said, opening the door and stepping inside.

Erica was laying in the bed, her back to the door. When she heard Rene's voice, she just sighed almost silently, but didn't say anything. Rene knew she was listening, at the very least. So whatever he told her, she'd hear it, and she'd take it into consideration.

The question was, what was it he wanted to talk to her about?

Rene made his way over towards her, and sighed.

"Two things." he said.

"One... you really need to let that arm heal." he told her. "Your insistence on keeping it wrapped is going to cause you some serious problems in the long run." he said.

"And two... I've been speaking to some lawyer friends of mine." he went on.

"What would you think of being taken into my custody... officially?" he asked her.

Erica growled as he said what he did in the beginning.

"Sure. Ok. I'll keep it unwrapped once hell won't break loose when I do." She stated.

"And sure." She added.

"Can't complain about that situation." She added. She didn't move though, so it was't the easiest to tell for sure if she was being serious. Her tone DID imply that she was, though.

"I'm going to get my friends in here to ask you a series of questions." Rene told her.

"And after that, they'll get the paperwork going so that your legal guardian will be me." he went on.

"Because nobody has been able to locate any of your biological family." he continued.

"And you said you'll 'keep it unwrapped once hell won't break loose when you do', eh?" he then asked.

"Enlighten me. You know of any way to make that situation happen?" he asked further.

"They are probably dead." Erica stated simply in response to how they couldn't contact her parents.

"I ran because of the brawl that started between them." She stated. "I knew I caused it. So I ran. Hoping to be able to make it that they would be able to level themselves out." She paused a moment before sighing.

"But, I doubt I left quick enough." Sheadded.

"And make that happen? Hah. I don't think it's possible."

Rene was silent for a moment, and scratched at his chin a little.

"See, I take that as a challenge." he told her.

"I need to do some research." he said.

"Regardless, expect a visit from some lawyers soon." he went on.

"If all goes well, by the time you're discharged from here, you'll be under MY care."

"Uh huh. Have fun." Erica said. There was a certain something to her that couldn't be placed, but it wasn't hard to tell that she didn't sound the most enthused. ALong with that, there was a degree of her apathy that just... didn't sound right.

If anything, it soudned worrisome.

"And ok." She added after a few seconds.

".........." again, Rene was silent.

He wondered what was going through her head right now.

Did she even care about anything any longer?

Was this borne of her markings, or something else? He didn't know, he wasn't a psych.

But this was concerning him. Greatly.

'...is this going to get worse before it gets better...?' he wondered.

In the end, Rene had easily obtained custody of Erica. He'd even managed to have it that no one was looking into why she was on her own, why she needed to have someone take her in. That wasn't too surprising though, considering REne knew some very good people for things like that.

It was a couple fo weeks later, and Erica sighed lightly as she made her way inside. She'd gone out for a walk whil Rene wasn't home, knowing that she coudl easily defend herself. Strictly because of the fact that she knew that a cast could hurt. a lot. to be hit with.

Although, REne had told her not to head out anywhere, mostly out of concern. But she didn't care. She couldn't stay in place like that. She was too used to being out in the open as she had been.

So she had taken to heading out for a walk while Rene wasn't home.

She hadn't actually SEEN Rene much since she got out of the hospital.

He said he was working on getting her enrolled into a new school, but that would've only explained a portion of his disappearances and solitudes.

When he wasn't at the hospital, he was elsewhere. Hunting things out, or researching things. And when he WAS home, he was always burying himself in papers and other work.

This time, when she got back, she found a mess of papers on the kitchen table, filled with words and names of things she didn't understand. However, there was one thing she DID understand:
