Well for one thing, the book had the notorious Borgias in it. That family was very well known during the Renaissance. The father being a Pope who had multiple children, and rumors surrounding them about incest and murder. So the evil 'queen' was the daughter of this well known Pope. Book mixed very real history with magic. Which is fine. Iunno it was just weird to read knowing history.
