Well, you do need a solid foundation to work from. But this is also why the best stories are written iteratively. Think of it like depth-of-field; ignore the details that are not immediately relevant to what you're trying to say! Like, everyone knows skin is porous and has fine little hairs, but unless you're close enough to see it, very few will actually draw that in a picture.

The spirit animal stuff. I've heard people talk about it, before, but I don't know enough to know how much of it is them talking out of their butt or spinning for a good story. (I am a fairly open-minded person, so I am not difficult to gull in many instances! )

Do that, too. Make something you like! The main difference I'm seeing is you currently favor a less contrasted and more pastel coloring method. If you think it's better, then see if you don't like the next thing you make in more vibrant colors!
