I'd recommend going back to the original first game on DS. I wouldn't say it's the best of all the games but it helps you get attached to the characters.

@Lynne: So I figured out what's going on. The original template is coded to have the hover background on the li but the text color is controlled by the a within the li. This can get tricky when it comes to messing with the hover because if you hover over just the edge of the li without being on the actual a link the color might not change properly. >< There is a way to get around it, though. You can remove the padding from the li (#user_links ul li) and then set a new padding to the link (#user_links ul li a). Here's an example:
