The rules I've heard were more or less like this:
Don't go for the prettiest, greenest watermelon. Those ones aren't actually ripe.
You want one with a field spot and a visible brown 'crack' showing in the rind. The field spot is the yellowed spot where it was sitting in the fields.
Check the stem. You actually want it to be dried out, cuz if it's green that means it was picked too early.

Oval shaped watermelons are males and more watery. More spherical ones are female and are sweeter.
And you don't want to go for the biggest....I don't remember why. Probably because the bigger ones will turn out less sweet.

I don't remember the rule for when you tap on the watermelon.

We got two. One we got from my mom and the other I picked out myself from the store. I watched a video with tips on how to pick out the best and sweetest watermelon, so I'm hoping the one I picked will taste better.

Oh, I didn't notice the new hairs.
