".........." Ryker was silent as the doctor asked that question.

"...a DNR..." he muttered.

"Eke made a promise. A promise to himself... a promise to me." he went on.

"But if he does crash... then... perhaps... yes..." he said quietly. "He should't suffer..." he mumbled.

"However, he DID wake up while you were gone." he told the doctor.

"And he has approved the surgery."

Why can't I just be

The doctor looked a little sheepish.

"Ah well then, i dont think a DNR is needed" he gave a smile.

"I'll go get the forms. Ill leave them here for him to sign."

The doctor turned to eke. "Hes a lucky kid to have you yknow"

The doctor walked out and only returned to drop off the paper before leaving.

Ryker remained silent as the doctor said what he did, gave him the papers, and then left.

"....lucky to have me..." he muttered to himself, before smirking.

"Heh. Never thought I'd hear THOSE words." he chuckled.

"Maybe a wretch like me really DOES have a place in this world." he went on.

"...question is... as WHAT?" he then asked himself, lightly placing his hand over his chest.

'Where do I go from... that point in the future?' he thought.

Eke slept for a while. When he woke up he saw the papers. He read them over and signed before looking at Ryker.

He didnt say anything but he smiled. He was too tired to rally talk, so for the three days before his surgery, he mostly slept.

He didnt want to be awake and stressing about his upcoming surgery and his heart was still quite weak, so he was tired all the time.

The morning of his surgery he was awake however. And he looked...uneasy.

Ryker had noticed this, and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"It's all right." he said.

"You're tough. You're resilient." he told him.

"You'll make it through this. Even the doctor's are confident of it." he went on.

"Don't worry, you'll make it through this, and I'll be waiting for you."

He looked up. "Still nervous...last time...i wasnt even aware i was going to have any until it was over..."

he looked to his blankets. he was still laying down. "I guess its a good thing im getting it...im so tired all the time..."

he wiped his face as tears had fallen. "Theres...theres gonna come a day...w-when ill be tired...all the time...too weak to walk...and...and there wont be a surgery that can help..."

"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Ryker replied.

"IF we get to it." he then said.

"I know it's a lot like denial, but I think there's no sense worrying about the future. It comes soon enough." he went on.

"And don't worry about that past. It's over and done with." he continued.

"Just worry about right now." he added with a smile, hiding the fact that he, himself, worried about the future a lot.

But he put on a brave face. For Eke.

"Im just...scareed...what if it doesnt work...and im stuck in a bed before i get my answers? what if..." he stopped

"................" Ryker was silent, before lowering his head a bit and pinching the bridge of his nose.

"You read me like a book." he muttered.

"Yes, I suppose I SHOULD practice what I preach." he admitted.

"Just... I'm sure it'll be fine." he told Eke.

"You're a toughie. You can do it. I believe in you."

He held out his hand for ryker. Of course they didnt get to hold hands as the doctors came in.

He bit his lip but nodded.

"See you on the other side" he smiled and with that he was gone.

The procedure was simple, but he had health complications. The surgery took 8 very long hours just to make sure he didnt bleed out.

Still, they were successful, and the device was working as it was meant to.

Eke was taken to his room to recover.

Ryker had been fretting the entire time, and was now sitting next to Eke as he recovered.

"....well... y'did it, kid." he said to the unconscious Eke.

"You did it." he repeated.

"I'm proud a'ya." he said further with a smile.

"....now I can sleep." he finished, before collapsing in the chair and falling asleep.

It was a long long while before he woke.

He Looked around. He was sore, but...he wasnt tired anymore.

Sure, he was groggy but that was the anesthesia wearing off.

He took a moment before he grinned wide. He made it. He was okay.

"I did it!" he cried then went quiet realising ryker was asleep.

After a moment or two, Ryker stirred.

"Hm?" he mumbled.

"Oh. Hey, kid." he said when he saw Eke was awake.

"Looks like you're awake." he said further.

"Congrats." he went on, pausing for a moment and smiling.

"Ya did it."

"Sorry i woke you up..." he rubbed the back of his neck.

"But...i think...i think ill be fine now...i..im" he placed a hand on his chest.

"I feel so much better..."

"Ryker...i...ill be honest...there was...a dnr form as precaution for the surgery...i.." he sighed.

"I signed it...i was...really upset and i...i was really scared...i..im glad i came through but...i kinda wish i didnt sign it either..." he looked down.

"AT any rate hopefully well be out in a few days and ill get my answers!" he grinned

Ryker wasn't sure what to say here, and then sighed.

"I understand." he said.

"A DNR is... a scary thing." he told him.

"It's something that nobody likes to think about." he went on.

"At least it wasn't necessary this time." he then told him, looking for a bright side.

"And yeah, we're extremely close to your answers!" he added with a matching grin.

"I heard the doctors here are well versed in taking care of dragons." he smirked.

"So it looks like ill be outta here in no time"

"I do understand that." he said.

"And we ARE close to the Capital, so them being well-versed in caring for dragons DOES make sense..." he muttered.

Eke was much bigger than the last time, but he really needed some comfort.

"The surgery was terrifying...cmere" he smiled

"and im sure you need...some comfort too...im sure you were scared too"
