This is exactlyI got the sequels to a book I bought last October, and just now finished. The trilogy follows a super flawed female hero, who has to save a place called the 'realms' where witches can get there magic. But like the creatures from that place want the magic back for themselves instead of humans. It is also based during the Victorian era. Like right at the turn of the century. When movies were just becoming a thing. For me it was fun to read because I know history.

There are some good authors out there these days - not afraid of taking (let's call it) "realistic" stances on certain topics and mixing it up with historical references, a decent plot, etc.
