Aria spent the afternoon reading in her room, spending a little time playing with Gambit outside in the gardens. By the time dinner came, she felt pretty good. She was there on time this time and had said hello to the king and queen in her usual manner. When she saw Lyle came in, she kissed his cheek like she used to,"Hello, Lyle." She said,"Did you have a good afternoon?"
Lyle gave Aria a funny look at her sudden change in behavior. "I...y-yeah..? I was...busy but it was nice I suppose?" he answered her honestly, taking his seat. "Well then, I'm glad you're all in a good mood. Stay that way, especially tomorrow." The queen ordered. The king looked at her as did Lyle. "We're having a visitor tomorrow. He comes from a different kingdom and he's visiting family here tomorrow. They'll be bringing him over to meet us so I expect all of you on your best behavior." she said seriously. "Mother, relax, we'll behave. Won't we father, Aria?" he asked them. Lyle's father laughed and kissed his wife's cheek. "Relax dear, we'll be good. So good he'll want to visit again soon. I promise."
Aria nodded,"That's good." She had said with a smile before looking over as the queen spoke. She smiled and nodded,"Of course, Your Highness." She said, wondering who this visitor would be. They hadn't had any visitors in a while, not counting the last party.
"So...who's the visitor?" Lyle asked. "A prince from a neighboring kingdom. They're relatives of the Thornton family." The queen answered. Lyle stared at her, eyes wide for a moment before he found his voice again. "A prince?" he repeated. "Sounds like he will be a good lad. The Thorntons are a great people." his father pointed out. Lyle didn't know them too well. He knew who they were but he never sat down and had tea with them. He wasn't a social guy. "I see.." Lyle said quietly, continuing to eat his dinner until he was finished. A prince? He wasn't sure how he felt about that but he had nothing to worry about. This was his home after all.
Aria ate quietly, listening to the conversation. Another prince? It would be interesting to meet another prince, if nothing else, it would be nice to have another person to visit with if Lyle was too busy. Aria had accepted it could happen and was looking forward to meeting the visiting prince.
Once dinner was over, the males excused themselves and headed to the study to continue working. The king made sure to kiss his wife's cheek before leaving after Lyle who was already talking to him. The queen finished her drink and looked at Aria apologetically. "I tried to tell them a visitor wouldn't be a good idea."
Aria nodded,"I believe you are right, Your Highness." She said softly,"But we will have to act as though all is well. I actually look forward to having a visitor, since Lyle is helping the king with things. I suppose I ruined things between us, since he seems so upset with me." She sighed softly and looked over at the Queen,"I'm sorry." She said,"For all of this trouble. I hadn't intended for it to be like this. I do hope you know, I do appreciate everything you and the king have ever done for me. Even if it might not show very well." She looked down at her plate and pushed it away, having finished her food.
"Dear, are you upset that Lyle is helping his father?" The queen asked. She looked at Aria and frowned. "You're giving up on this? Dear if you don't want to do this anymore then you don't have to but I'm sure we both know what that means. You will have to go back to working here. If you want to leave though, I won't stop you."
Aria shook her head,"Of course I am not upset he is helping the king." She said,"And I'm not giving up on this. Not at all. I just feel bad things seem a bit tense right now." She explained,"It would be silly for me to be upset over that. I know how important helping the king is to Lyle. I'm also not used to this downtime with both teachers having emergencies to deal with. I've been doing what I could to keep busy and not bother anyone else but...." She shook her head," Yesterday was such a disaster with getting lost. I feel terrible about all of it."
"Well dear, I wish I could help but you two need to work this out on your own if you both truly want this to work out." The queen said as the servants began clearing out the table. "You two have talked haven't you?"
Aria nodded,"We did, but I don't know how much really got resolved." She admitted, briefly telling the Queen about the conversation,"I think, for now, I am going to focus on what I still need to learn and hope things will calm down soon. Maybe with the visitor tomorrow things will get a little better."
"Good Luck dear." She said softly before standing up. "I do hope that everything works out for the best for both of you." She said honestly before excusing herself. Back in the study, Lyle and his father we're busy looking through paperwork and if Aria was brought up, Lyle just shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know where we stand anymore." Lyle answered.
Aria headed off to her room after the Queen left. For the first time in her left, she felt totally alone. She entered her room and closed the door quietly behind her before sinking onto her bed. She looked over at her sleeping fox and let out a sigh,"At least with this visitor coming, maybe I won't feel so alone anymore." She murmured to herself as she grabbed her book, deciding to read for a little while."
The rest of the day went smoothly. At the end of the day, Work had been finished for now and it was time for bed. Although, Lyle wasn't exactly tired. He was not looking forward to tomorrow and having to pretend that everything was fine when it clearly was not. Lyle instead, walked over to the room where his piano sat, untouched. At least he still had a piano to comfort him. An inanimate object loved him more than Aria, that's what it seemed to him. Well, they were very different, he clearly couldn't have expected it to work out. Maybe deep in his heart he wished it had but they were worlds apart. Much too different. The only thing they had in common was they both read books. In the bigger picture, that didn't mean anything. Sitting at his piano, he pressed one key and sighed.
By that evening, Aria had heard all the work had been finished. She had a feeling she knew where she could find Lyle. She stood quietly at the door, gently knocking on it so he knew she was there, even though the door was open,"Lyle?" She said softly,"Can we talk...? I don't want things to be like this between us... and I want us to fix this somehow." She was unsure of what he would say. He might not even want to anymore. She hoped he did, as she really did too.
Lyle was pressing the same key slowly over and over again, clearly lost in thought. He stopped when he heard her but then pressed a different key before resting his hands on his lap. "I don't know what you want to say but I'm listening." he answered quietly, his eyes on the keys. He knew he had sheet music he just had to find it. After he stopped playing years ago, Lyle had locked away the boxes containing the music sheets. Maybe now would have been a good time to get them and practice.
"I just want to fix things between us." Aria said softly,"I still want this... I still want to be with you. I do love you with all my heart and I'll do whatever I have to so we can make things better." She took a breath, trying to not break down in tears,"I just want to fix things. I hate all this stress and tension between us and I just want to make things better."
"You make it sound like I enjoy it. I'm sure you'll have a good time tomorrow with our visitor because I can promise you that I'll be too busy to have fun of any sorts. I might just play the piano after breakfast if I have the chance to. I don't even know when these people are coming over." Lyle said, running a hand through his hair. "What do you want me to do Aria? Tell me what it is that you want me to do. Because right now as I see it, there's nothing I can do."
"I never once mentioned you enjoying this." Aria said,"I don't enjoy this either, feeling like a nervous break down coming all the time because I don't know if I've angered you or not. I want to know what you want. Do you still even want me anymore?" She felt a few tears fall, but she quickly wiped them away,"That's something I need to know before I can start to figure out where to go from here. And before you ask me the same question, I still love you with all my heart, despite the fact things have been rough lately."

Lyle chuckled softly at the question and finally turned to look at her, crossing one leg over the other and resting his hands on his knee. "If I didn't want you, do you think I'd be so upset right now? Would I have allowed you to take these annoying classes if I didn't even want this?" he asked her then lightly rubbed his temples and looked at her warmly. "Please don't cry. Trust me when I say I haven't even given you a reason to cry and I really wouldn't want to make you cry. Like...really cry. I'm sorry it's not all sunshine and rainbows Aria. I really am." Seeing her cry was his kryptonite and even though he wanted to run over to her and hold her in his arms, he was too stubborn to even bother.
