"And... well, I have a number of things I like, I suppose." he then admitted.

"I mean, I like surfing the internet, I like tinkering with coding and stuff..." he went on.

"Training's cool, too." he continued.

"Though I need to get back at it." he admitted.

"Keep it up and stuff." he went on.

"Focus on cardio, probably."

Sammy paused when he mentioned cardio, before looking him from head to toe.

"Cardio? Done deal. Lemme heal and ..." She started before freezing.

"SHIT!" She exclaimed.

"Evan, gimme your phone." She half ordered as she whirled around to face her brother.

"Seriously." She continued. I gotta call Uncle Rene. See if this shit is gonna let me do my run tomorrow."

Evan almost jumped when she made her exclamation.

"Ah!" he yelled.

"All right, all right!" he said.

He dug out his phone and handed it to her, with her hastily snatching it from him.

Darrell was a bit surprised and taken aback as well.

'Woah.' he thought.

'The hell did THIS come from?' he wondered.

Sammy quickly sent a text to Rene, knowing his number like the back of her hand, before handing the phone back to her brother.

"Thank you. Let me know when he replies." She said simply with a sigh.

"I really don't want to miss my run tomorrow.... but I know that if I can't go, yet do, he'll have my head." She just sighed lightly, again, as she looked out the window.

"really hope I don't have to though.... I have a chance for a scholarship with this one."

"Hold on." he said further.

"Scholarship?" he asked.

"Your run?" he asked further, before thinking about it a little.

"Oh... huh." he mumbled.

"You do more marathons, sprints, what?" he asked her.

"Yes." was all Sammy answered with.

"I do all and then some." She added. "Marathons, races, sprints, triathalons the odd time..." she trailed off with a shrug.

"And I have a chance at getting a scholarship for university tomorrow, so long as I'm on the track team and blahblahbalh."

It was at that point, she got a response from Rene.

"...he'll be here in 5 minutes." Evan said to her.

"And he says he wants to talk to you out of earshot of any adults." he continued.

"....make of that what you will." he then mumbled.

"Oh, and he's also asking WHERE to meet in the house." he added.

"If he's gonna mana in, then I'll meet him there. If he's going to mana to the front door, I'll walk with him."

Evan responded for her, and they waited again.

And then there was a response.

"...your room." Evan said.

"5 minutes." he told her.

"....oh, yeah." he then said. "Is Kitt still in your room?" he asked. "Or was she when you woke up?" he clarified.

"She was there a lot while you were out of it." he went on.

"...surprisingly, she wasn't growling much at Darrell whenever he walked by." he added.

"I didn't want to push my luck and poke my head in to see if things were all right." Darrell admitted.

"I'll take the fact that she's not directly hostile to me anymore." he reasoned.

"Yeah, she was." Sammy answered with a nod.

"And Darrell, don't take it to heart." She then continued. "Kitt's.... not a nice kitty when it comes to new people. Mom was mentioning how she tried to eat Evan and I for the first month or so."

"Apparently, scared the hell out of the her and Dad though."

"That's... horrifying." Darrell said.

"Apparently Mom was finally able to beat some sense into her." Evan then said.

"But yeah, this place is... weird." he sighed.

"Anyway, Sammy, odds are you should go to your room and wait." he told her.

"...want me to smokescreen Mom, Dad, Aunt Ashleigh and Uncle Ash?" he asked.

"In case they come looking for you or want to check up on you?"

"Yeah... it's a place that you gotta get used to." Sammy agreed with a nod.

"And yeah, thanks. Darrell, if you'd be so kind... when that pizza is done, just put it on the counter for me? I'll grab it after Uncle Rene's gone." She added. After he agreed, she headed opff to her room, wondering why he wanted to speak with her - but also hoping that she wasn't going to be in trouble or anything. For all she knew, she would be. but the whole 'away from adults' aspect was seriously confusing her.

She stepped into her room, foudn Kitt still in there, so she ushered the cat out, before sitting at her desk to wait.

"Right." he said.

"We both know why I'm here." he told her.

"So let's get down to the bottom line." he continued.

"HOW important is tomorrow to you?" he asked.

"Which is to say... how badly do you feel you are to participate in physical activity tomorrow?"

Sammy just sighed as Rene said and asked what he did.

"... I'd rather try for the scholarship, but you know that I won't run if you tell me not to." She answered.

"I do want to try, it's my chance for it, but I'm sure there'll be another chance in the future. Especially if I were to tell the ones in charge of it that there's a physical reason for it - injury and the like."

Rene just sighed deeply.

"And that is as middle-of-the-road as it gets." he muttered.

"...but I have something..." he told her.

"And old lanthan recipe." he said further.

"It was a special serum... meant to keep a warrior fighting past the point where he could no longer fight. If he was injured too gravely, or the pain was too great, he would be given it so that he could ignore his pain and injuries, and continue to fight until death." he explained.

"Granted, this is nowhere near this level of severity, but I can concoct a lesser version of it." he told her further.

"But you'll need to know that the crash, when it wears off, will be... not nice."

"All right... fill me in on the details." She continued.

"Because if I were to do it, then I'd really like to know what I'm getting myself into."

"Well, the original recipe is for a warrior with life-threatening injuries. Which is to say, his life is over, but he is allowed to continue fighting. In such cases, the crash results in immeasurable pain, and death." Rene replied.

"In THIS case, the pain in your injuries would flare up again." he told her further.

"And, ultimately, it would delay your healing process." he went on.

"Think of it as hitting 'pause' on everything in your body, pain AND healing." he continued.

"So when it wears off, there's a decent chance you'll endure such pain that it brings you to your knees." he told her.

"Is this a risk you're willing to take?" he asked.

"You're an adult, you can make this decision on your own, without your parents stepping in to influence yourself, or me." he finished, which let her know why he wished to speak with her alone.

"That ain't too bad at all." She then said with a shrug.

"......" Rene was silent as she made her response.

"All right." he said.

"It's YOUR body." he told her.

"Just don't complain about the pain you'll be feeling." he warned her.

"Also, you know your parents are going to find out about this." he then told her further.

"Doctor-patient confidentiality states I cannot discuss this with them, as it is not a threat to your wellbeing... long-term, anyway... but I suggest you decide on HOW they find out." he finished.

"I'm due at the track for 10 in the morning. It's a 5 hour run." She then told him. "If that makes any difference."
