GOOD MORNING and Happy Monday everyone!
How is everyone? How was your weekend?

I took a "I'm a slug day and I don't care" day yesterday. I really needed it. :3 Today, I'm hoping to be much more productive (but without stress). At the least, I'll need to make a run to pick up a few groceries.

Good Morning.
I'm feeling a little under the weather, got a feeling it's from all the weeds and yard work I did yesterday. It kind of feels like allergies. I moved stuff around in the garage which kicked up dust. and I did an entire garbage container of weeds from the garden. e.e"
Happier note; I got a lot done outside and read a novel over the weekend.

@Another Movie Addict: Hello AMA. How are you today? How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?

@Koah: Oh, I'm sorry you're not feeling great, but I know exactly what you mean about the after effects of weeding, cleaning, etc., at this time of year! It sounds like you were productive, though. Hopefully you won't suffer too long :3

So far today I worked out a bit, showered and cleaned up, got some groceries, did some meal planning, etc., (which is why I haven't been online) and now I'm sitting down here for a few minutes to do my DuoLingo for the day (and maybe actually learn some Italian or French) ...

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Now they're valuable, and they want to get'em. We didn't even have the six that are being cut from publication. I was asked at least 5 times about our Dr. Seuss during my morning shift. And then it just stayed that way til yesterday.

Oh jeeze. That sounds rough. Which ones are being cut- do you know? I know there's some "discussion" going on about some of them but I didn't follow up to figure out which ones...

It's only six books, “McElligot’s Pool,” “On Beyond Zebra!,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!,” “The Cat’s Quizzer”, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”,
and “If I Ran the Zoo”. Books that are not even remotely the ones people tend to give a shit about. Just these six are no longer going to be published, because of racist imagery against those of Asian descendent. Like no one even called out the company for these books, the company themselves decided that given how Asians are currently being attacked in the US, these books were just out of the question.

Everyone's favorite books are still going to be published.

This Dr. Seuss issue is driving me insane. omg. I studied children's literature in college and was a children's librarian for a while and I just... Can't handle this ridiculousness.
It felt like it was an overnight thing too since I wasn't paying attention to that whole "cancel culture" fad.

@Another Movie Addict: "Mulberry Street" and "Zoo" are two of the ones we had, actually (and two of my favorites, tbh)... until I donated all of my (might have been original run) Dr Seuss books a few years ago to a family with young ones who lost everything in a fire? hurricane? (I don't remember which natural disaster)

@Koah: I agree with you, actually. It's good that our awareness is growing, but at what point are we just going to get to "human is human is human"??? Differences should be celebrated, not used a points of division between us!!

The only reason I know anything about this, is because I work in a used bookstore. And honestly, as a white person. I'm not going to tell people what is an isn't offensive and hurtful to them. I'm not Asian, my opinion isn't the one that should count in this discussion.

And again. It wasn't even anyone attacking the company over this, it was their decision through and through.

I actually just spent a few minutes looking at my household collection of Dr. Seuss books. I have a collector's book from the 90s with 5 different books in one. I googled which books got banned and most of them are in this single book. I just briefed through it. The stories are great, with no ill-worded text. It's just the pictures that are iffy at best. uhg, this bothers me so much. I have a very diverse collection of folktales from around the world for my kids and a lot of those stories have much worse stereotyped imagery.
Out of spite, I'm reading my big 90s Dr. Suess book to my kids this week. =3=
I could ramble on this for hours. I'm not going to though. //sigh//

@Another Movie Addict: I understand and don't disagree (but I see so many other places where we (as a culture) are all too ready to jump in and judge somebody or some other culture for their decisions or perspective, so I find some of this a little hypocritical). And I do wonder what more is going on behind the scenes in situations like this... like, how many Asians are on the Board (whatever board) that made the decision to pull these books... or is there some other agenda in play behind the decision. I also personally feel that it's not necessarily a bad thing to see and experience different parts of our history (including the "unsavory" pieces) for ourselves. As long as we have historical context, it should be seen as just that... signs of the changing times and perceptions, over time.

@Koah: <3 Collectors edition from the 90s... really makes me wonder what my books from the 60s and 70s would be worth these days if I still had them and my kids didn't completely destroy them when they were little...

See to me it's a lot like this. Do either of you remember that episode of the Looney Tunes (Merry Melodies at the time), where Bugs Bunny puts on blackface and pretends to be a VERY racist image of a slave to get past someone?

Most people don't remember that episode at all, because it was banned. And sure at the time I'm sure people were upset about it, and yet. Here we are several decades later, and not a single person wants it back. Because 'well I loves that episode as a kid'. Doesn't matter that it's extremely harmful, but I just really loved that episode. We should you know just teach how it's wrong and let it continue to hurt a community, because history am I right?

Basically what I'm saying is that, nostalgia goggles make it pretty easy to sweep aside the problematic thing. Because if you admit that it was wrong, then you're wrong.
